Question Do you wash your car?

Found this '87 911 targa on eBay, check out the vehicle description:

"Offered by original owner. This 911 Targa is likely the finest example of this vintage in America. Always kept in climate controlled garage. Never washed! Never needed. Always detailed."

It is 15 years old and has 14.000 miles on it. Not needed?
Wonder what he means by "Always detailed"

In the summer/fall I used to go weeks between washings only washing tires/wheels and wheel wells on the Targa. A little California Duster, then some Glass Plus on a damp soft towel followed by some Meguires and it was done in about the same amount of time it took to dry the door jambs, under engine lid and front trunk. Not to mention those nasty bumper accordians.

I have to admit I don't wash my car that often. I also don't drive it in the rain, and it's always covered when not in motion (lots of ribbing at work). The California car duster does a great job at removing the driving dust. After 4k miles this summer I probably only washed the car 5 times.

BUT, I do wash the car before waxing. I can't imagine detailing a car without washing.

A 15 year old car with 14k miles that has never been washed... and isn't either really dirty or has scratched paint? Hard to believe. I know there are currently products out there for detailing without washing, but I doubt they exisited 10 years ago.

I saw an ad for a BMW M6, below 10,000miles, 1987 model year, if I remember correctly, last year. This guy also claimed that his car had NEVER BEEN WASHED!!!!
I guess there is mutant gene for concours fanatics that causes this to occur from time to time...

(He wanted a LOT of geetahs for that car as well, like $32K I think)...

I've washed mine about four times this year, which coincided with the return from each drivers' ed event. otherwise, it's car cover and CA duster and no rain.

How can it be the finest example of this vintage its a RED TARGA WITH A TAIL! Fergodsake!

And I would never buy an old car with only 14K miles. I bought an `87 Carrera with 15K miles and ended up with the dreaded early valve guide wear @ 30K.

The guys dreaming for 34K

My car sits outside, but is always covered when parked.

About once every other week I hose it down with plain water and dry it off. It's not dirty enough to need real washing. I guess this is the equivalent of using a California duster.

It gets actually washed and the rubber treated about every two months.

I too, am a big fan of the California Duster.
It helps keep washing down to a minimum.

Maguires has a product that is a spray. Sort of like dusting your car. I think it is called Final Inspection. It has been out at least for 10 years, maybe more.

Ok, beat me up over this one.

First, living in the Bay Area, the car doesn't get that dirty. Add that to the fact that my baby is parked in a garage under cover when not in motion.

Every couple months or so, I take it to one of the local Hand Wash places. $15 and 15 minutes later, my baby is all shined up and off I go.

Do you wash your car?

This is my favourite weekend passtime, however with Australia in the grip of the worst drought in our recent history, we now have Statewide Water Restrictions in place, so it's something I'll have to plan carefully from now on...

Sounds like my Mothers car. 15 years old, 14,000 miles, never been washed. In additon, my Mothers car has never had the oil changed, I have to add air to the tires when I am in town. Only thing is shedid not keepin a climate controlled garage. She kept it in the climate.

Hmm... Let me see... The car is 15 years old. 14K miles. Never washed... Not enough information to come to any conclusions? You must be kidding.

Looks good though. Maybe the pictures are from when it was new?

I guess maybe out there on the left coast with all that sand and no dirt all your 911 needs is a dusting. Out here in Missouri I drive my 911 every day, rain or shine, and it gets washed every week.
