Question Another exhaust thread.......

I've read more exhaust posts than I care to mention...
I'm getting ready to backdate my 81sc to 80ROW CIS and use the dizzy from the donor.. The engine is stock except for MSD ignition.. I had a sport muffler on my car, liked the sound, but sold it to a fellow Pelican..
What should I do to the exhaust while the engine is out??
1. Nothing and just install another sport muffler..
2. Backdate to SSIs, Rarly8 headers or the equivalent, and pick a muffler to go with it??
Not looking to 'rattle windows'.. I like the look of the GT3 muffler, but I can't tell if it would be too loud from the sound bites, and then there is the valence mod issue.. Or go with a 2 in 1out muffler..
The car is street driven only..
Fire away...........

do you get emission tested? If not, consensus seems to be that for a stock(ish) SC, ssis are a good choice but won't give you a HUGE boost. If you are subject to emission testing, the hassle of switching out to a stock exhaust every ? years would likely outweigh the minimal gains provided.

No Emissions testing South Carolina.. And guess I should have also asked is the performance gain worth the price tag... I would be doing the work myself so labor is not an issue..

Are you swapping in a whole '80 RoW motor or attempting to put an '80 RoW CIS on an '81 US motor?

Reason I ask is that the two have different intake port sizes, and I think you'll have injector nozzle interference due to the large intake runners on the RoW and the smaller intake ports on the US heads.

And BTW, I put on an early exhaust (stock HE's from pre '75) and a Bursch muffler on my '80 RoW SC and it made a very noticeable difference. Sounds good too!

Josh, I'm aware of the different port sizes.. Have done this swap before, port matched the later heads and was satisfied with the results.. I have installed Bursch mufflers in the past and was satisfied with sound.. Not a 'sexy' name like Dansk, but I liked the sound and so did others.. Price is right too.. I do have the ROW engine, apart and in good condition.. The old proverbial 'slippery slope'..

I did the M&K 1in2out GT3 muffler and valance on my SC with a Euro Pre-muffler and Stock Heat exchangers. Sound is nice and loud but could be quieted down a bit if need bit with inserts. The look is unbeatable, but thats just my opinion.

I've done a bit of research and it seems like the dyno sheets point to a free flowing stock exhaust putting out as much power as SSI's. Debatable, for sure. The sound and feel of the car are another matter depending on which direction you take.

It IS a slippery slope. Double-Black diamond slippery.

I have a supposedly Dansk 2 in 1 out I got from another pelican(it doesnt have markings) I'll give you a good price on if you decide to go that route... I decided I didn't want to cut my fiberglass bumper and then change my mind to 2 in 2 out.

If you don't like the price tag on a set of ssi's then search for a used set of 74 and earlier heat exchangers. Thats what I did and I think I paid less than $300 for the set. Just not as pretty.

Sorry for not returning your call, I am traveling.
The SC will benefit more from SSI 1.5" primaries than from our tuned headers with 1.63" primaries due to your exhaust port size. You will gain more from SSI and muffler with the SC than the Carrara 3.2L does due to the fuel injection systems CIS vs Motec. The 3.2L will benifit more with our larger primaries. Our dual inlet mufflers come single out for the least noise and dual out, S, R, or GT3 outlet for a more sport sound. We do have baffles or caps if you want the look with less sound.

Thanks for replying, Brian.. Is SSI and GT3 muffler the best option? What about stock exchangers, Euro premuffler and GT3 muffler?? Like the GT3 muffler look, with a new valence of course.. I can't tell much about the GT3 sound from the sound bites, but I'm guessing I'd prefer it with the baffle option..

The Motronic 3.2L will benefit similarly from the SSI/muffler or OEM Exchanger/ Premuffler combo due to the primary sizing on the SSI's. The SC however benefits more from the SSI for the same reason, the primaries are sized properly for the 3.0L engine.
Muffler makes no difference as both benefit over stock. Stock muffler should be retained if you require a quiet system and/or wish to maximize torque at the expense of horsepower. This is reflected by your driving habits or how the car is used.

Thanks again for your knowledge/input, I guess we need to talk at some point to finalize what system will be best for me and place my order.. No rush.. You can call me when you are back in town or tell me when the best time would be to catch you...

I have the same setup on my 88 as Merlinfe has on his SC. M&K 1 in 2 out GT3 Style with M&K pre muffler. Custom valance. I have the active baffles in mine. Its pretty loud, but not crazy. I am also running the Steve Wong 93 octane chip.

Thank you all for your input and PMs.. I have decided to go with SSIs and a Dansk 2 in 2out, 70mm outlet sport muffler.. Got the muffler coming from a fellow Pelican.. Working on a 2 out valance from another Pelican.. Will purchase the SSIs from our host, unless I can find a nice used set at a reasonable price which is a 'shot in the dark' at best.. I already have the oil lines for the conversion..
Funny how you can put all kinds of stuff on other's cars and have reservations on what to do to my own car..
