ignition switch
Hi All
I replaced the electrical part of my ign switch (73 911) ~ 8mos ago (purchased from our host) . Fixed my problem of not getting the key to turn fully cw to start engine. Same problem has now resurfaced - can't get key to turn fully cw to engage starter. Seems odd it would fail so quickly (car not driven that frequently). Suggestions other than replace it (again)? Getting older and not a fan of being a contortionist to get at it again. Charles |

I would lean towards the mechanical mechanism as the culprit. I have never done this on a 911 so shooting from the hip.

As Bob said....your problem is most likely in the mechanical side of the switch.
Remove key and spray some Blakecleen (or similar) in the key slot to flush it. Hold a rag under it to catch the mess. Then use some graphite, or lube of choice. If your key is worn try a different one if you have one.

+1 re Pete's suggestions. I used WD 40 after flush -- solved problem!

I would clean the battery cables and other various battery wires.

Thanks for suggestions
I'll check battery connections, and flush switch w/ wd40 key is worn. Charles |

Sounds like the start lockout in the mechanical portion is acting up. If you cannot remedy your problem with the clean/lube action, take a look at this thread. It may inspire you, or discourage you.

the ground post that screws into the battery was loose (not the ground wire clamp).
flushed key, added some graphite, and got charger on - car started 1st try. OK to add locktite to keep battery post from working loose? Good advise - thanks Charles |

I wouldn't use Loctite on a battery or battery connection. Not designed for that kind of thing. Clean both parts - the lead post and the clamp - well (you could use emery cloth), put back on, and get it good and tight. Should stay put forever. There are conductive greases you could get to put on the post before you put the clamp part on, and they help stave off corrosion.
