911 SC Steering Wheel Hub - Ridgid or Collapsable
My 1990 SC came with a Momo Fittipaldi steering wheel. I am very happy with it. I feel it is a bit far away from me - e.g. I have to move my seat up very far forward.
I am looking into spacers... before I go further, I need to sort out the hub - the one on the car is rigid. Questions: a) Did the car originally come with a rigid or collapsible hub for the stock wheel? b) What are other folks using a rigid or collapsible hub? c) Are there any issues with a rigid hub? TIA, Wayne

The car's stock wheel has an integrated hub and is rigid. Look at a photo of any stock wheel for sale on fleaBay and it will be obvious to you.
I have a Personal (Nardi) steering wheel with a rigid hub. I have no issues, but don't know of any with the collapsible hub. The collapsible hub is an engineered safety feature, nothing more. Oops, track guys would say saves weight too.

Wayne, assume you meant to say you have a "1980 SC".
I have an '82 911SC. The OEM steering wheel hub on mine is collapsible. I've been driving with a later model wheel on the car for awhile but recently had my OEM wheel re-stitched by Dallas Custom Steering Wheel and plan to go back to stock (gladly as it's a beautiful wheel IMHO). Pat Arnold |

Oooooooops fat fingers on my part. Yes 1980 SC.
Thanks to you both for your input. Unfortunately they are contradictory. I know both will work - I guess I'm thinking of safety issues. Any others have some input?

'74 and later oem were collapsible. Not sure about prior to that.

Here is a photo from a Carrere extended hub (shows collapsible feature) from this thread:

Thanks again to all that replied. Thanks finstone for the photo and especially the link to the link to the other thread - both very helpful!

Of interest, since the wheel collapses in an accident due to the inherent weakness created by the holes designed into the hub that you don't see when the steering wheel is assembled...which is somewhat isolated from the plastic parts you do see, if your wheel makes a slight rubbing sound when you turn it, your car may have been in a minor accident which slightly compressed the wheel/ hub but cannot be seen unless you disassemble the wheel. The same is even more likely when buying a used wheel since often it was separated from the car it came in after a serious accident. I have bought used wheels that looked great, but were unusable. The holes should be symmetrical.

Thanks for that info finstone - I am aware of this - I bought a VW bus that suffered from the same collapseable steering column issue - it had a totally different setup for the collapsing part, but it was obvious enough (after a while of head scratching) the the thing had collapsed and then "straighten" out again.
