Is anything easy? Sunroof Guide Question...
After receiving the new cables for my 84 Carrera I was all set for the install unitl I saw the messed up ends on the guides(black channels that the cable and shoe ride in)
The black guides seem to have been worn down to the point of becoming really thin, one side was even flaired up a little bit from the force of the cable end running into it...I tried to push the flared part down but now the metal is brittle...are the guides ruined? This is about an inch on the very back of the guides where the cable runs through...looks pretty worn. How much is normal. How much wear should they have back there and is it normal? Is this where they are stopped? The old cables have the plastic ends and the new ones have the metal ends these are the stops correct? Do I need to replace the guides now as well? It seems to me that the metal ends of the new cables will tear right into that soft metal of the guides and make it worse. I do not want to put this thing back together and have it do the same thing it was doing. -Jeff Kramer nolift911@hotmail.com |

Jeff it sounds like you ansered your own question. I'm not too sure yours is the same but here is my.02 worth hope it helps. If you don't want to do it again as I have, then replace the gides. However I have the newer gides in my 82SC the only thing I had to do was to spread the channel where the shoe slides in, apart a bit. The reccomendation at that time was to install new gides. They are updated ones, also mine are stainless steel and did not show a lot of wear, so I reused them. My right cable pulled free from the shoe so I pinched it back togeather then a month later it gave up alltogeather. The new cable is slightly larger in diameter because of the pipe cleaner type wraped cable. I installed it and it works fine, a later post I read said to remove the felt that wraps the cable, but I'm not going to do that unless there is a problem. Granted it was a snug fit but like I said no problem.
Good luck to you and take your time so as not to scratch the roof top use masking tape to protect the paint. Speedy1 ![]() Last edited by Speedy1; 11-04-2002 at 08:16 PM.. |
