expansion valve in 85 carrera.

Hi folks. Is this part hard to change? I see a lot of black goo in there. I take it that you just clean it all up and the unscrew the part on two ends. Does all refrigerant have to be out of the car? I think the original unit is 30 years old so I would like to change it out. I have pressure only on high side port, Nothing on low side. Thank you, Nick
