Anyone Compensating?

"They" say that guys who have monster hi-fi stereo systems (audiophiles), and guys who focus on performance automobiles are compensating for their ineffectiveness at 'handling' their 'better half' (assuming they even have one). I'm trying to be delicate here. "They" say that car and stereo hobbies are substitutes for a mutually satisfying interpersonal relationship. Can you tell I'm still trying to be delicate? What do you think?

I'll go first. In at least one instance that I know of, this rule simply does not hold true, but I think in most cases it probably does.

Damn who care about the "mutally satisfying" just as long as I'm satisfied!

Superguy, I admit it...my Porsche ownership is a feeble attempt at compensating for my being 5' 8 1/2". Since I bought my 993, everyone thinks I'm 5' 9". I just can't keep living this lie...

I tell my wife that Carver, Porsche, Oban and Cabernet will always play second fiddle to her and the kids. Funny that when they are not home all four of the above seem to make an appearance!

Claiming compensation is jealous talk for those that don't know how to enjoy the finer things in life!

It makes me feel at least two weeks younger, when I jump in the p car and ride around with the top off.

Cool

I think it starts very, very early..the greater the disorganization of relationships an infant has the greater will be the movement to isolate away from relationships..which has nothing to do w/creativity and its expression/911..so, an arguement can be made to connect the scattered neurons in any way you think appropriate.............Ron

well, the 911 is my time machine, not my interpersonal-relationship-suckiness-compensator. Although it does work well as a blunt object for probing marriage weaknesses.

I'd say mine is music (making it rather than playing it through a stereo), but I think it is broader than that. One of the great things about being a musician is that you can be at a party, have fun, and not really have to make annoying smalltalk. I'm sure there's tons of fodder for psychotherapy...

Then again, music is a time machine, soooo...

It dawned on me today that songs are my "photo albums" that trigger memories. Both other people's music as well as my own. Thank god the tape deck has been rolling at lots of gigs over the years.

The 911 is a vehicle (pun distended) that is along for the ride (pun disgorged).

Cars and bikes (Harleys)have alwaysbeen my first loves.
I assosiate the vehicle of the year or decade with what was happening in my life at that time.
I have a very bad memory for time and names...so the vehicle is the trigger as to where I was and what I was doing (like little trips the government sent me on).
Ahh the memories...well...the bikes...the cars..and I seem to remember some ladies along the line....even had a wife for....2 bikes and 4 cars....ahh...the memories.

That's exactly why I could never sell my SC--It's the last remnant of my 20's that I've held on to. Ah the memories, thrills, smells...I'm getting moist someone pass a tissue.

Ya know, I've never understood how this whole "penis substitute" thing was supposed to apply to Porsche owners - the cars are the size of Volkswagens! Gloat about the engine size? The average Mustang has a bigger engine.

As for being an audiophile into "big equipment:" the RR doesn't even have a radio (and I've been driving it a year!), the Porsche has the same piece-of-crap cassette player it came with (the speakers in the doors don't work, the only tape I own is the Hall & Oats album with "Maneater" on it - and that's broke), and I don't have a stereo in the house 'cause I like peace and quiet. I want music, I open my windows and drive down Lake Shore Drive next to the wall.

Videophile? Nope, 27" tv, Symphonic VHS recorder (on sale at Best Buy this week for $50) and Apex 600 DVD player ($65 at Wal-Mart).

Of course, the place is packed with books, and they say the brain is the biggest sex organ...

"They" sound like "they" are jealous because they don't have the toys, cannot even openly aspire to them and can't relate enough to their "better half" to make the first step towards aspiration and ownership. "They" are losers!

I own my toys because it pleases me and I obtain satisfaction from their ownership and use. My toys run the gamut from fine cars and weapons to art books to original art to good food and wine. I find these losers trying to psychoanalyse my lifestyle mildly amusing until it's done to my face when it can become very amusing if I forget my manners. I feel no need to defend my choice of lifestyle but I feel free to laugh at theirs.

Well I can certainly say that in my case P-car ownership is just an extension of two of my personality traits. I have always appreciated the finer things in life and since my first bicycle as a child I've been a "gearhead" the P-car covers both these catagory's very well. And while "they" may be correct about P-car owners, "they" are not correct about P-car enthusiasts the difference here being that owners purchase to impress someone else, enthusiasts purchase to impress themselves. I would submit to you that I believe it to be factual that a healthy hobby leads to a more well rounded individual and a reduced stress level both of which would only help with "interpersonal relationships". I further believe that all 911 owners are audiophiles and while our "music" may originate at the back of the car and fill the cabin with it's sweet sound, it does not come from speakers!

the car is hobby, if this somehow turns the opposite sex on so be it(makes getting along alot easier if she likes driving fast around a racetrack), but the P-car is not something i use to persue women with, i am however well aware of the sterotype that people get when i mention i own a porsche
