In Montreal there is a guy who drag races a formally air cooled, now electric 911.

It has three motors. Michael Bertrand.

And we're OK with this?

There are heaps of Korean/whatever made crap that can be made electrical.

Why ruin a classic?

This is my thought too - but to each their own.

Porsche Crest Electric Porsches

If you want a Porsche and a electric car why not a 356 kit car and save the 911s or start with a new 911. I believe there was someone marketing 356 electric cars for sale in Excellence magazine years ago.

Agree with kit car but there's YouTube vids of a drag racing Porsche that is total electric and is smokin fast. Way faster than any air-cooled cars

You had me going for a minute with the RC car.

When I bought my '75 Targa 5 years ago, it was cheap, non-running, fairly neglected, engine of unknown condition and I had considered doing an electric conversion. At the time, getting performance comparable to a 2.7 was achievable, but reasonable range was not (at least not at the same price of an engine rebuild). As battery technology gets better, this may make more sense. (I did rebuild the engine and have been very happy with the results.)

I'm not advocating converting historic/classics to electric. It might make sense for badly neglected cars that are past condition for a "reasonable" restoration. My thinking is that it may still be better to have them on the road (even if electric) than languishing in a garage in a state of disrepair.

I think there will be an interesting market in the future for DIY electric conversions as the battery and battery management technology evolves.

"The typical turnkey ZelectricBug sedan (1958-1966) starts at $64,000."

See ya later. Neat cars, though.

We provided the gearbox for a 993 cabriolet electric conversion about 10 years ago. The owner also had an another exact identical, silver will blue top and interior, 993 cab. Gotta love Boulder. It's been done, though with the change in values of clean original cars, I don't know how many are going to be done going forwards.
