Tight Turns and Gas Smell
78 SC.
When I take tight turn and push it hard (interstate on-ramp), I get a whiff of raw gas. This even occurs with a half tank. Is this common and/or dangerous?

You could have a small leak. Mine had similar situation and I was told its normal for an old car... until one day I turn on the car and fuel is pouring on my garage floor.
Should be no smell. |

Check your gas cap gasket and rubber hose clamps on the tank filler neck.

Brad,
My situation was similar and it ended up being the gas cap, which I replaced and all fixed!. |

Replace the "crush" seals for the fuel filter.

I have the exact same problem with my 82. I think it could be some of the vent hoses around where you fill up. Happens with partial tank or more with a full tank.

Had the same problem. Replaced the vent hoses that are connected to filler area. Kind of a pain to replace but only took about 30 minutes. After that no smell at all.

I'd suggest making sure your replacement isn't a Cohline hose, or budget to replace it shortly if so. At least a couple of us have found Cohline hoses between one and three years old that were leaking. A search of the archives will turn up details...

Thanks guys. I had purchased a new gas cap a while ago, but I think when I turn it to "tight" the seal is compromised. Yesterday, I filled up and turned it so it felt sealed buy not turned 100% of the way. 3 hours of hard driving and no smell so far.

Just take the gasket out of the cap, put something... rubber, cardboard, plastic.. cut in the shape of a gasket in with the gasket on top of it. You just want to make it a little thicker. Simple.
