I have a '76 911 (bought in less than average shape, I would say, but very sound) and was wondering what advice some experienced owners have to say about wide body change-overs. I've gutted and rebuilt rear and front suspension and steering, and will soon turn to cosmetics.
Particularly, the options for the front: - glass or c/f? - flares welded on? - used oem turbo fenders (which years fit? are any model years preferred?) Thanks for any advice. |

My opinion would be to stay with steel if you can and the OEM fenders are a great idea. I have seen some used ones on Ebay and various sites for sale. I dont think they are that difficult to come be at a reasonable price.

Stick with steel for the flares, but use f/g for the front bumper and either f/g or c/f for the rear. The c/f does not have good ballistic impact resistance, stones thrown from the front will quickly puncture a front c/f bumper.
The latest technique is gluing, my body man swears it works great, all of the newest parts are designed for this method, but I have no personal experience with glue/bonding. When I did my 72 we MIG welded the pieces on. You do need to be careful as the welding process will warp the sheetmetal. You can buy new steel flares for a very reasonable amount, the $ saved in prep is worth it. All years of 930 from 76-89 have the same shape, early ones were weld on ala aftermarket, late were incorporated in the stampings. Don't forget to budget for either new wider wheels or spacers 1" frt., 2" rear. ------------------ Bill Verburg My Home Page ![]() ![]() |
