AC Receiver Drier

I need to replace my 30 year old ac compressor, so I also need to replace the receiver drier at the same time. If you go to this pelican parts list you will see the receiver drier prices are all over the place. Pelican Parts - European Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche • BMW • Mercedes • Volkswagen • Audi • Saab • Volvo • MINI

So my question is, is the Porsche brand that much better than the others, and that is why it's price is so much higher?

The only reason is the Porsche Tax. If OE is important, get it. I've done mine twice, once after a hose failure and second when I did a Keul/griffith system several years ago. Its a basic consumable part.

The book Porsche 911 (964) Enthusiast's Companion by Adrian Streather recommends considering an inexpensive dryer, as the there isn’t a unique desiccant in one dryer vs another. I bought an inexpensive dryer last year, when I replaced my expansion valve.

Aftermarket dryers come in different sizes. I bought a Four Seasons dryer (new for less than $20) and it seems to work well. It is larger than the OE unit. The sight glass is on top (not on the side) which is a bit of a drag.

Off topic - How is that book in general? I bought the 911SC book he wrote and unwrapped the plastic.

I got fifty hundred books but with Pelican, they are all dinosaurs now.

The sight glass is only usable if you still use R12, it is not applicable with R134.

I just bought mine from autozone. Really cheap and works fine. I think under 20 bucks. To show you how great it is, on a 90 degree day my AC cooled the cab down to 86!!!! Just kidding! kind of. But the drier from Autozone is fine. My car is black on black btw.

Hey Bob, it's a very good book. I bought it right after I bought my 964. Most of what is in the book, one can search this forum and find, but it's nice to see it in print. There are little tips, such as the dryer recommendation, that are nice.

Thanks for all the replies. I will just go with a regular drier no need to pay extra for the Porsche brand.
