I believe it's a 19mm, but when I had my tank cleaned and pressure tested, they gave it back to me with a homemade plug removal tool made from a 19mm (I believe) bolt with a nut tack welded to it. You just stick the hex head of the bolt in the plug and use a wrench on the welded nut. You could probably double-nut the bolt if you don't have access to a welder.

That's exactly what I use. Lots cheaper than a 19mm Allen wrench.

Is it the same size as the 915 trans fill/drain plugs?

Some spark plug sockets have a hex shape on top that is a perfect fit,you can insert an extension through the socket the opposite way and use it to remove the plug.

From an old thread:

"Tank filter screen is on bottom of gas tank just forward of the fuel line connections. This is also the drain plug. It has an 21mm inside wrenching hex and one can see the word "BENZIN" cast into it's rim. A tool to loosen the hex may be made out of a 14mm x 30mm long hex head cap screw and two 14mm nuts. Put the nuts on the bolt and lock them together (double nut technique); the head of the 14mm bolt is 21mm and matches the inside hex. Any remaining gasoline (an 1/8 of a tank could be 2-3 US gallons) in the tank will come out so run the tank low, be prepared to do something with the gasoline and remove the screen in a well ventilated area with no open flame sources (not a garage with a gas hot water heater pilot light). Wear splash proof safety googles and have a gasoline rated fire extinguisher on hand."

Hi Guys,
No sure if there's more than one mfg of filter screens or not....BUT....I can tell you I changed mine earlier this evening..... and the hex size is 22mm NOT 21mm as indicated in the previous posts.

Earlier today I rec'd this 22mm Hex x 1/2" socket I'd purchased on Amazon for only about $9.00. (local hardware store and Autozone did not have anything this big)

And as you see....... the 22mm hex fits perfect.

After draining the fuel tank in order to replace my original 30 year old Bosch fuel pump....with this socket...the screen change took 5 minutes.

Regards,
JT

I had a large cold chisel which fortuitously was about a 22mm hex. That and a large crescent wrench did the trick. Though $9 wouldn't break the bank.

This is the set up I used to remove the plug. I forget the size of the bolt. The plug isn't that tight in the tank.
Ironically that was the last job I did on my car before selling it.

It's 22mm. Just went down this road. Two nuts welded back to back. Worked like a charm. Make sure you get a fuel proof o-ring when you go back together.

Brian,

That's a 7/8 inch numerically equivalent to 22.2 mm. I have the same set of nuts & bolt for gas tank filter removal.

I decided to change the gasket (old one was rock hard) on the gas level sender and wanted to take a picture through the sender hole. I tried my good camera but couldn't get the flash to light up the inside of the tank. I used my iphone and I got a pretty good picture. It looks spotless in there! One of my things to do was to change the drain plug. I got a new sump plug from our host and the 22mm titan for $9.00 from Amazon, I guess I won't be needing them for a while. Car has just over 100K miles on it.
