Any downside to awl-grip paint on the fan shroud?
I know lots of boat painters and was thinking of dropping the shroud with one of the to spray it...

My fan shroud (the fiberglass part that the fan/housing blows in to) was badly scratched/beat-up when I rebuilt my engine. I did some minor wet sanding and then painted with VHT crinkle engine paint. It looks OK (but obviously not factory).

I don't have much experience with painting the fan shroud. However, I have heard that the clearance between the fan and shroud is fairly tight. Because of this, I had my fan shroud ceramic coated, which is thinner than powder coat. I'm not sure about the awl-grip but I would imagine it's pretty thick to stand up to boating and gripping properties.
Here's my finished fan shroud. it's ceramic coated in cast iron gray and the fan itself is bead blasted and then clear coated. I did the valve covers the same as the fan shroud. One thing I would do differently, next time, I would sand the shroud smooth as you can see the imperfections thru the ceramic coating. ![]() |

To be clear, I mean the plastic part...

Awlgrip is quite similar to Imron; both are more durable than standard single or 2 stage automotive finishes.

Was wondering about heat but probably no problem. The real issue will be color selection. I will have to choose whatever they have around and open because I am not going to buy a gallon $$ of the stuff.

Regardless of the paint used... The hardest part is getting the shroud clean before painting.
I got major "fish eye" when I did mine. ![]() I've since found out you need to clean it with wax a grease remover or similar BEFORE sanding it. ![]() I used standard polyester resin and glass fibre matt for the repairs but my damaged areas were relatively small. (a few cracks and chips) However considering the heat in the area normally I would choose epoxy resin for larger damaged areas.
