Clutch replacement cost?
So it's time to replace the clutch on my 88 3.2. Called a couple of shops and I'm being quoted $2,500 total parts and labor. This includes the genuine OEM clutch kit - disc, pressure plate, and release bearing, a flywheel resurface, and a valve adjustment. Sounds very reasonable considering the clutch kit is $1,250. Thoughts? I've used these shops before and they're very good.
Thanks!

Good quote. It used to be $350 for the kit. Back then, you can drop the engine in your driveway, change the clutch, pressure plate, t/o bearing, adjust the valves, change the oil for all of $500.
Now that these cars are $30,000, those days are over.

Don't cut the flywheel, not recommended.
You'll need to do the cross shaft update for the TOB Bruce |

Wow, the kit has gone way up in price.
I'd also add change the pilot bearing, and at least think about changing the crankshaft seal and oil cooler seals and oil pressure switch. |

Can you do it yourself? I just pulled my engine and had the clutch disc resurfaced for $35.00 at a shop. Brought along the flywheel and had it checked out - everything was perfect on it.
The clutch and pressure plate had been replaced around 85,000 miles ago and I did replace the throwout bearing along with it. Still looks like new after I cleaned it up. Also had two alternators along with the starter checked out at another shop and that cost $72.00 So if you can do the work yourself you will save a ton of money. However, I know some P-car owners don't have the space or room to be able to do it themselves which is ok too.

Yes, not difficult. Don't forget the high temp grease on the input splines and t.o. pivot. Make really sure everything is CLEAN.

Great replies - thanks! Forgot to mention the pilot bearing is included in the estimates.
Been considering doing this work myself but just don't have the time and want to get her back on the road quickly. Will definitely address the "Triangle of death" leaks while the motor is out. Thanks again! |

My 02. cents worth
Quote:
E.G. A SACHS clutch kit is a OEM part and Pelican also rates it the same as the " Genuine Porsche" part... Five Star.* SACHS clutches are manufactured to meet or exceed OEM specifications That's more or less $330.00, excluding any tax, difference. You will also find good savings on all of your required parts from our host or possibly another on-line retailers. I replaced the same items plus the throw-out bearing, rear crank seal, oil cooler seals, including a clutch cable that I know that you will not require. For a comparison, I paid $920.00 all up for the Labor at a very reputable VW - Porsche repair shop. Maybe there will be other Pelicans that may jump in regarding SACH's clutches. This is only my .02 cents worth. Take care
