Exhaust Wrap?

I have inherited (from a supplier friend of mine) a large roll of some "lava" exhaust wrap. I am looking at the exhaust running close beside the valve cover on my 84 Carrera and wondering why not ust this wrap material to eliminate some of the heat generated right along the valve cover. I did a search and can see no definitive discussion here on this topic.

I have uses a similar wrap product on the exhaust of my 1923 Stutz to replace the original asbestos wrap used when it was made. The exhaust pipe on this car runs close to the floorboard and generates significant heat at your feet especially when driving slowly. The wrap eliminated most of the heat in this application with no apparent negative effects.

Any thoughts pro or con?

I wrapped the header tubes on my 3.2 directly under the speed and reference sensor cables.

I wrapped the tubes on my B&Bs next to the oil S hose to deal with the heat and not having the stock B&B "sink trap" line. Been running it that way for almost 10 years.

I have a little on mine running next to turbo drain elbow. The belief is it'll hold the moisture in rotting out cheaper stainless exhaust.

I wrapped my cat by pass and cross over pipe. Some say it causes rust issues. No problems yet and it hardly ever rains in Califoria anymore.

I wrapped the exhaust header pipes on my ATV ten years ago. It's sees tons of lake bottom mud holes and rice fields during duck season. The pipes are no worse for it. I get the argument if the exhaust was always put away wet but I also have to think that the heat from the exhaust will dry out the wrap pretty quickly. -J
