How to R&R flapper box cables at control lever end?

I feel like an idiot asking about this... :confused:...

It appears it must be obvious to others as I cannot find any description of how to remove & replace the Bowden cables at the control levers, in spite of all threads here on heater cables & flappers... nothing relevant in the Bentley or Haynes either... I pulled the handbrake lever assembly up without disconnecting any cables to inspect it before tackling the actual project (which is to replace the whole lever assembly - my handbrake lever has developed a crack one side after 380,000 miles!)...

Mine is an '85 with manual heat, one flapper lever either side of the handbrake lever. The flapper cables pass through holes in the bottom of the levers, then are twisted around themselves to form an elongated loop - not the formed round end for the pin setup like 87-89 cars.

The cables shown for sale by our host for '85 have a long tail after a twist.

Those long tails are not present in my car... if they were ever there, they were cut off after installing.

Sooo...

1. Is the long tail to assist a one-time installation (with fingers?), and has to be cut it off after to avoid it fouling the tube end?

2. On an installed cable with no long tail, will the twist still wind/snap off & on with needlenose pliers (i.e., cable is reusable), or does the loop have to be cut to remove it, and a new cable used?

I cut all but 1/2" of that section off. They still twist to lock just fine with your fingers.
