Does the front plate come off or do you have to dig into it??

How did you get that out??

ON OUR CAR, THE FRONT PLATE DOES NOT COME OFF.

If I recall, there are two nuts holding the assy to the dash.

I have never removed these controls.

What are you trying to do?

There's a problem with one of them being stuck and Or broke need to get inside.

I already figured a two day job

I figured it out. First remove the radio then look in behind heat controls,there you will find one 10mm nut attached to firewall that needs to be removed.After that remove cables from the trunk and pull out.A major pain in the butt I might add.

I just removed mine to do a cosmetic restoration and to figure out why my fan won't turn on. As others noted, it is a major pain to get it out. The control itself isn't too bad, if you're lucky enough to have slack in the Bowden cables. Note there are three grommets, one for each cable, where they pass through the bulkhead. You have to remove the grommets in order to pull the cable housings out, at least from inside the cabin.

i found a replacement but havnt pulled out the cables yet thanks for the heads up.

When I had mine out, some part of the attachment system broke - perhaps what held the plastic facing to the steel backing? Easily solved by drilling four small holes, and using some black headed screws, which blend right in.

The switch for the fresh air blower motor is something Dr. Porsche (Ferdinand) could easily have designed, or purchased, in 1899 - exposed contacts, with a wiper on the end of the arm. Mine had basically burned out. I replaced them with the multi-position rotary switch used for the AC (if you had that), so it looks fine in the dash.

Now if I could figure out a replacement for the blower motor. List members have several times said buy X from NAPA, and make a plate like this, and so on. However, X turns out to be something which would work fine, with the plate type stuff, for the rear, engine mounted, blower. The front blower is a sort of open design housed in the plastic casing of the air handling system.

I bought the original Bosch motor on eBay for $80. It had a different number, but when I got it in and replaced it, it's identical. PM me if you want to know more.

I don't really want to replace the motor I have, bought used to replace the previous one, with another used original. They don't last all that long, and start to shriek, so they become useless.

What I want to do is replace the original motor with one which is more reliable. But that is no simple task, as the plastic case is designed to hold the short but kind of tall original.

That's what happened to mine the plastic broke away from the metal ( really poor design).
