Thumbs up Recommended Lubricants & Sealants for Engine Rebuilds

Just thought I'd share the lubricants and sealants I recommend for engine rebuilds. With the exception of the assembly lube, these are the same as recommended by G&W Motorsports in their engine rebuild classes. G&W uses Federal Mogul Engine Prelube LL-5, but I believe that product has been discontinued and I prefer the Red Line product. It's great stuff!

Engine Assembly Lube
Red Line Assembly Lube
www.redlineoil.com
Used on all bearings, journals, and bushings

Cam & Rocker Lube
Chicago Mfg. Extreme Pressure Lube #3
www.cmdlube.com
Used only on cam lobes and the follower surface of the rockers

Anaerobic Sealant
Loctite 574
www.loctite.com
Used to seal case halves & cam tower to heads

Sealant for Exposed Areas
Dirco HT
Available from Wrightwood Racing, (805) 385-7195
Used for sealing nose bearing

One note: For lubricating the cylinder walls and piston skirts of street engines G&W recommends a moderate application of assembly lube. For racing engines where you need the rings to bite quickly, just a light coating of engine oil is used.

Please feel free to post other sources for any of these products and to ask any specific questions about their application.

P.S. Wayne, I did check your catalog but couldn't find any of these. Do you have a "Lubricants & Sealers" section other than the Swepco products?

Ive used Dow Corning 730 for sealing the case halves, cam towers, The stuff works great, and it ought to. Its $67.00 a tube.

The $67 tube is good for quite a few engines though

Its also good for tranny sealing etc.

Question

JWW, you mentioned that you used Dirco HT. Do you have a more convenient source than Wrightwood?

Thanks,

zuff,

While I realize there is still dealer/distributor stock availailable for sale ... I don't think you will find any info on Loctite 574 on their website. The last time I checked was Dec. 2000, and no data was available except for the recommendation to use Loctite 518 in its' place! Better adhesion to aluminum and the ability to fill voids up to 0.050" when used in conjunction with the Primer/Activator spray is claimed for the Loctite 518 product.
