RSR Steering Wheel?
Does anyone have a line on this steering wheel? I saw this on an RSR car in Lime Rock a couple years ago. It is essentially the three spoke wheel with a really fat rim. Much more beefed up than stock and had special stitching. I like the look and feel of this wheel. The guy claimed the car was all original and the wheel was unique to RSR's.
Any ideas? -Jeff Kramer nolift911@hotmail.com |

If you look in excellence or 911 world mags you'll find a few selling this wheel.

The good Dr - I can only assume you are talking about one of the suppliers offering the Momo Prototipo wheel.
Momo don't make it any more, and you can get a new old stock one from the supplier in Excellence. Lotsa money too. As it happens, the New Zealand importer has some on the shelf too (but silver spokes not black). Cheap. The closest other thing available is a Momo Mod 07, which Pelican Parts either has or can get. It is dished where the Prototipo was not. Best thing you can do - have a look at this thread here: my finished low-budget-sports-purpose-period-correct-interior!!! and confirm this is the wheel you want. If so - MS Road Race has the NOS ones. Lotsa money.

I think either NZ$250 or $275 plus mounting kit. I actually don't remember. I have two, and one was cheaper (no good reason either)! (edit) Just rang and checked they still have them for - NZ$200 incl GST. NOTE: They may be factory seconds - I think this is why they are "on special". Neither of the two I bought had any material issues (one had a scratch on the back of a spoke, for instance). But I better warn you. I think one of the other guys on the BBS from the US bought one from the NZ guy and was happy. I also have a second hand one (black spokes - came with the BMW ). So I have three. Greedy bastard. And an even sexier 30 year old Nardi on the '69. It is a fraction bigger so I can still see the instruments.

Concorde Trading
33-35 Sir William Ave East Tamaki AUCKLAND Ph. +649 273 1145 momo@xtra.co.nz I bought all my BMW's race seats and harnesses, plus my race suit from there too, all from a chap called Bob. Really good guy. Remember, check how much shipping will be. Check what (if any) duty or tax you pay when it comes into your home country. And finally, if I see these on Ebay from any of you guys, I'm gonna be very disappointed...

I don't know any steering wheel that is actually unique to the early RSRs. They seem to have had an assortment of wheels with different treatments depending on the vintage. I have seen 914/6 leather covered wheels, with thicker padding and a butterfly horn (also used on the '73 RS) or with an early horn button, on '73 RSRs. I have seen Prototipos or '74 Carrera steering wheels (without the center pads) on '74 RSRs. Some of these wheels were also used on 911R, 911T/R, 911ST, 935s, etc.

I like the silver-spoke Prototipo for early Targas - matches the roll bar:

If anyone is looking for an original (black-spoke) Prototipo, I have a brand new (NOS) one laying around that I could part with. Not cheap, but less than MS Road/Race. Just email or PM me.

I am the US Pelicanhead that Cam graciously assisted in the purchase of the two Prototipo's a while back.
They are unfinished Aluminum spokes, with black leather on the wheel itself. They are perfectly flat wheels, unlike the one in Curt's photo which has a slight dish to it. I think they are seconds, but they are very acceptable in condition, at least the two I received are. The Momo horn button is only a loose fit & needs some shimming to be snug, the adapter was as needed for an early car. I think the NZ$200 is actually less than I paid, a good deal to be sure, at the current exch rates.. It took about a week to get here, I think my total cost was around US$300 for two of everything + shipping costs.. You will NEVER obtain this wheel again in the US, I think, too old of a design...

My Carrera is an 84. The steering wheel I was referring too was just like the stock three spoke that I have but much thicker padding on the rim. Basically a beefed up 3 spoke stock wheel.
Sounds odd I know but it looked great and felt even better. The big thing I like about the stock wheels are no hub adaptors. I hate that cheezie, generic rubber accordian thingie that you have to use on aftermarket wheels. Main reason I did not get the 930S wheel, no flames to those that have them but not to my liking. -Jeff Kramer nolift911@hotmail.com |

My thoughts exactly. . .well almost. Maybe more like ""cheezie, generic melted rubber accordian thingie "FWIW; the previous owner of my SC, put a second skin on the standard three spoke. It help thicken the wheel, in a good way.
