Rust everywhere and how to deal with it?
 

All of my zinc plate metal has a white coating of rust.
Does anyone have anytips for removing it?
I was planing on replating.

Oh and plastic car bubbles are BAD BAD BAD.

The white power is the zinc selectively corroding to save the steel underneath. So it's doing it's job.

The replating process requires a chemical strip of the steel rust. That also easily strips off the zinc plating. Just try any liquid rust remover. Strips off the zinc too.

Whoever does the replating will take care of the previous coating. They just want it clean. No oil, grease, dirt.

If there is a lot of orange rusty scale, then yes, grit blast away to remove it. You may decide it's not worth replating when you are done.

Hello jargon. Regarding the car bubble, are you talking about the bag or the inflatable approach. If the bag, did the reccommended desiccant not work? Please share your thoughts behind the "bad bad bad." Thanks.

The white dusting and the surface corrosion on the hood lock is simple and can be wire brushed off. The rust on the Door I am very concerned for you. It is very extensive and you are on seeing the tip of the iceberg. The lower jacking point may be completely gone. If this car is driven regularly just tackle on area at a time. Do not start tearing everything apart or it will take you a year to get it all back together. Start pulling some pieces apart, clean them, replace some and keep going. The door area is going to need some metal fabrication and welding. A very common area if you seach jacking point rust on here.

Wow! That car looks like it have been in a flood. Never seen corrosion distributed like that.

I see rocker box replacement in your future. Looks like a car that has never seen the inside of a garage.

Yeah im not very optimistic right now.
I will be stripping her down to the chassis.
I think i will try the ultrasonic cleaner (8 gal) route for most of the components.
I was away for work and my dad put her in a plastic bubble outside for a couple years thinking it would be protected and instead aged the car like 30 years.

As Marv said either that car was in a flood or kept for years in a very damp place. Anyway there is a product called rust converter that will stop the reus and can be painted over. You need to clean the scale off first.

However I would recommend the entire body be soda blasted and primed and prepped. Too much rust not to take the farm down and do it properly.

I'm sorry to see your car like that, hopefully the rust is still at the superficial stage and can just be blasted clean. You may also want to look for assistance on the Paint and Bodywork forum.

It's not a flood car, it's an east coast car.

soda blaster with a medium cut on 70psi will take off the scale and most of that nasty stuff in the engine bay...then hose it out with water... the part on the door jamb is the big issue

Yeah, at this point, you will really need to strip the chassis to the bare metal. As the expression goes, that's just the rust you can see.

Tell your dad that salt is used for preserving meat, not cars.
