Interesting Mess I Have Here
So my fuel pump recently decided to stop running and while doing some troubleshooting I stumbled upon this cluster hidden under the belly pan covering the fuel pump:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seems long ago, someone thought it was a good idea to zip tie the sirens of the aftermarket alarm system (?) to the front swaybar and let them sit on the bellypan. Looks like one of them didnt survive the vibration. My car (83 SC) has an aftermarket alarm on it and I know there was a factory alarm as well. Any idea if these are the factory or aftermarket sirens? Regards, Jose Last edited by 2jmotorsports; 05-19-2015 at 08:30 AM.. |

I have only the factory alarm and that's where I discovered the horn when redoing my suspension; so I suspect it's factory.

The 4th photo down in your post is a pic. of the factory alarm horn. Round metal vibratory type.
The other plastic bell shaped siren and the wire cludge is after market mess. Cooper |

If it were me I would remove any aftermarket alarm stuff and keep it factory original.

So after looking at the factory wiring diagrams I have found that the connections to the fuel pump relay socket have been "altered". I assume this is related to the security system so off I went searching for it. More mess uncovered. I found it installed under the passenger side foot rest:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Its a Python System 70 with Invisibeam Plus. Still searching for the alarm wiring diagrams but I have found that the Invisibeam Plus is one of those hilarious talking alarms that says "STOP YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO THE VEHICLE, STEP BACK!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnkEaT1IQH4 I would really love to get rid of the aftermarket alarm but it seems pretty complicated. I will keep searching for the alarm documentation because I dont want to start cutting wires and removing splices solely because they do not appear on the factory diagrams. Gah, what a disaster. |

Maybe search for / reach out to 86 911 Targa (Gerry). I think he helped a couple guys with info on removal at after market alarms.
That video does get amusing.

Aftermarket Alarm Removal
I'll continue to document my alarm removal progress to complete the thread.
So I ended up replacing the fuel pump and filter for peace of mind, then re-wired the fuel pump relay circuit back to original per the factory diagrams. Car started right up! I am now looking at these 4 square relays located to the rear of the fuse panel screwed to the inner shock tower. Im thinking these are not factory, correct? ![]() Im going to follow the "check factory wiring diagram, disconnect foreign circuit, see if it starts, disconnect next circuit, see if it starts" method until this whole system is removable. I'd start by disconnecting the battery, then sever the fat wire loom coming from all that crap under the foot board. Toss it in the trash. Then just follow all the non-porsche wires and disconnect and patch stuff as you go. Usually not too difficult.

I agree 100% with John Walker. Remove that stuff and repair the damage as you go. I would never install that junk in any of my cars. I hate alarms, factory or otherwise.

![]() ![]() Took John's advice and finally removed all of it. This cluster weighs about 7 lbs. Only thing left to patch up is my power window circuit as that is currently not operational. Thanks for the help so far! |

My buddy has a mint 930 turbo with 30,000 sitting in his garage because he lost the key fob to one of these stupid alarm systems.

I had a similar experience with my 86. The alarm installation, while it worked, was a frightening mess of quick connects and other"poor practice" things that easily could have been a disabled car or one the fire truck is pointing a hose at. Stereo installation guys often create similar messes so maybe check that out too. All the non stock wiring was removed and I protected the circuits that Porsche missed ala Gerry's advice and also added in headlight relays as well. Well worth doing it right.
