Question Fender removal advice?

I've been trying to remove the driver-side fender of my car for a little while now. Basically there are two linked problems.

- firstly, there's putty-like gunk which seems to be almost gluing the fender on. What is the best way to remove this stuff? It doesn't seem to be terribly receptive to being scraped off. Ideally I'd like some kind of solvent to remove it, but I've no idea what would work.

- secondly, some of the bolts are *very* hard to get to, and covered with the gunk. I can't get in with a knife to clean the gunk off, and there's no way I can see to get in there and force a socket on to the nuts. Do I need to remove anything to get to them? There are a couple of lines which I'm guessing are oil lines and a largish black canister. I'm not sure what these are, but it'd be cool to be able to get them out of the way. Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I was just digging around on my 88 in that area and, on my car at least, those lines are A/C hoses. The large black cannister is (I think) part of the fuel vapor recirculation system. I would think it would be easier to remove the clamps holding the hoses on and then just push them out of the way for better access.
Good Luck

Fender Removal

Eion,
You'll find body sealant between the fender and the body. Remove all mounting bolts (accessible thru the trunk) and some bolts under the fender close to the door hinges. Headlight connection, etc. should be disconnected. Inspect carefully before pulling the fender away.
Once all these bolts/fasteners are removed, gently pry the fender away from the body. Make sure you put new sealant afterwards.

Good luck.

OK, I've disconnected all the headlights and stuff (like the fender strut, etc.) already, and I've done all the bolts accessible through the trunk (as far as I can tell). The problem is those gunk-covered bolts behind those metal lines.
I don't think they are A/C lines, all that stuff seems to be on the other side of the car. They *seem* to go via the oil cooler, but also to go via the black canister (which does seem to be a fuel filter, so I'm confused too ). I'll take some pics later, and I'll try moving the lines out of the way, but they don't seem super-flexible

Thanks for all the help

I replaced my fender w/body supply store body caulking..looks somewhat like a flexable black plumbers caulk..

Eion..pics will help..don't forget the fuel fill connection..don't scratch that fender, may need some help on removal and install..I used some line suspended from ceiling for assistance.......Ron

They changed the filler connection for the 964, as far as I can tell - all you need to do is undo four screws and it drops away slightly from the fender, with the flap and everything in place.

I'll take some pics later. Scratching the fender doesn't really matter - it's not flared in the same way as it was originally
Anyhow, I just ordered a new fender from MS Road and Race, $400. Bargain, about a third of the price of a new one (thanks for putting me on to them, Wayne!).
It certainly isn't going to just fall off on me, that sealant stuff is practically glue.

Sealant between Fender and Body

Wade,
You can order them from the Porsche dealer. The original stuff does not hardened even after 20+ years. They come in long strips or roll with paper backing.

Or visit your local body shops. They have similar material that comes in about 18 inches strips very similar to the original Porsche sealant except they come in shorter strips.

This sealant prevents a metal to metal contact between the fender and the body. And provide better fit and sealing.
