Fair price for an 89 911 Targa?

My friend has offered me his 89 g50 Targa. Im looking for opinions on the going rate for the car? Consider it original condition driver quality, nice but not perfect. I know what these were selling for 4 or 5 years ago. But it seems like the market has gotten away from me.

No, not kidding. Now I would hope that you would be getting a buddy deal, but even a buddy would want to meet you somewhere in the middle and get a fair percentage of what I could get on the open market. I wouldn't be expecting to get a car like that under $30k.

Just start a new thread in Marketplace. Nobody will care. It's a pretty active forum. Or just look at Rich Gas' thread. And his car isn't even a G50 car. It's a Guards Red 915 Carrera.

The market has gotten away from you. If the car is as described, 35+/-

Lets talks about real car for reference. That will help. Here is a/my '89 G50 Targa similar to the one described and not for sale. I bought it for a daily driver, not an investment (in fact, only have basic liability insurance)...but have never had time to drive it much. No unique color or options (red on black) except has the fancy extra seat adjustments. Perfect original paint except very high end repaint of front clip and new windshield (small accident, previous owner). No chips or dings. Perfect, like new stock leather interior including radio, tool kit, owners manuals, etc. All maintenance/repairs documented since new. Always garaged. Over 80K mi. Original owner chromed the wheels decades ago, but they are perfect with no peeling or flaws. I figured it was worth about $25K. From the posts here...I guess I am little low. What do you guys think?

Stratoblaster has been offered a real car. Same basic answer for your car. Mileage helps it. Accident and repaint hurts it. But it is basically a wash. Mid to high 30s.

Agreed, it is a real car...but "nice" and "driver quality" are pretty vague. Pictures and details like mileage, etc. are not. Not many cars from this period have not has a paint scrape and touch up. This car (pain and interior) is perfect and looks and drives like a new car. So if this one would go for about the same as the one he is looking at...he has an easy comparison to make now (condition).

Thanks for the input. Mine is probably worth more than I realized.

Sold my 89 Targa a year and a half ago for very high $20's. Never liked that car to begin with and it had an accident on it's Carfax.

Both of these cars are mid $30's cars, maybe a bit more.

Personally, I don't like the car nearly as much as my '74...but everyone else I meet (nonPorsche people) seem to love it (it is their vision of the perfect year, color, model, iconic P-Car. Especially anyone under 50. I would probably not have kept it, but my wife finds it tolerable to ride in and likes how it looks...and not my "stinky, loud" '74. It is a much better car for a long trip with high gearing, power doors, alarm, cruise, etc...but not nearly the fun of my quicker and more precisely handling '74.

I want your '74.

I agree that many of these cars have had scrapes and some paintwork. The ones that haven't are often into the 40s. The market is becoming split between collector grade cars and drivers. Both prices are going up. I even tried to buy a '74 this week with an S title. I didn't care. Condition trumps those sorts of things the older they get. As more and more of them have paintwork it will matter less and less, just like it wouldn't matter very much on your '89

Strato - Offer the friend high 20's and it might be a win-win from a friend.
The market has a lot of people on the outside looking in.

Flint - Nice car and I agree with your driving impressions of it vs the 74.....

Years ago, I wanted to get rid of my 73.5 for a newer SC. I drove one and immediately changed my mind. The newer one steered heavy at slow speed and wasn't as quick with the high gearing......Glad I kept my 73.5 and put in a high compression 3.2; best of both worlds,

You might not like my '74....because it only looks stock. Swapped in my Supertec 3.0 hotrod engine from my previous '74 (see pix below while still in the previous car), sportseats, 7 inch wheels, H1s, etc, My wrench in Albuquerque really dialed in my suspension with fresh turbo tie rods and bigger torsion rods, etc...and of course, hard oil lines and cooler and fan from an '89.

Yes, a 73.5 is a sweet car.

You would be mistaken. That's exactly what I am aiming to build for myself. I just need to find the chassis to do it on.

Sorry about the duplicate photos (and the thread hijack)...meant to have these in there:
engine from the top (still in previous '74)
