917 brake caliper?
Can anyone identify this brake caliper?
The mountings are 12mm spaced at 3 1/2 inch, the 4 pistons are 38mm, the disc thickness allowed would be about 30 - 35 mm. There appears to be a date stamp on the bridge: 28 2 68 |

It appears to be similar to these calipers on a 908

One more,
![]() There are differences though, your pic is a 3 piece ala the 930 caliper, rather than the monobloks on the race car. The piston sizes match that used on the 930 front as does the mount. My guess is that it's a prototype of the 930 caliper ![]()

Thanks Bill
I haven't seen detail pics of 908 brakes before. I had a look at the Vehicle Craft site that you mention on your own site and the 930 caliper certainly looks very similar to the items I have. ![]() |

Nick,
Per Ludvigsen, p. 667, THAT IS an original 917 caliper!

Yup, I have that picture too.
Just looking for confirmation from elsewhere. Does anyone know if the 917 used the same size calipers and pistons front and rear? |

This is the picture from Karl Ludvigsen's book that Early_S_Man refers to above.

Nick,
Paul Frere mentions the use of 34 mm and 38 mm pistons in a set of revised Ate calipers on p. 24 of Porsche Racing Cars of the 1970's. The 'originals' used 34 mm pistons all around ... p. 22. Are the bridge bolts made of Titanium?

The saddle is aluminium, the bolts are steel.
I think these will do the job on my 3.0RS replica! |

The very few first '78 3.3 911 Turbos had the ATE 4 piston calipers (the same as on the 917) instead of the Brembo ones, because of a delay with the Brembos.
These could well be a pair of them. GeorgeK |

So what's the story behind this original caliper?

Bill, NICE website, first time I've been there! It answers almost all the questions I ever had about 911 brakes!
I love the early 911's and would love to own one one of these days so I lurk over here alot...... One question - is it possible to fabricate new mounts/modify the existing mounts on the rear trailing arms for the 930 calipers - as opposed to modifying the calipers? Thanks!

I have just bought 4 of these calipers to fit to a '74 3.0 RS replica. If they really are 917 calipers then I don't want chop them about to fit non Turbo trailing arms. The fronts are no problem as they fit straight onto my Bistein struts with Turbo hubs and calipers.
Thanks GeorgeK, I hadn't heard that before about the ATE calipers. There are no manufacturer markings on these calipers, just the possible date stamp, and a small circle with GT13 in it. ![]() One caliper has 411x9 cast into it ![]() |

The '73 2.8 RSR and '74 Carrera 3.0RS used a finned version of your caliper called a "type 917" now I see where the name came from. This was the first use of those types of caliper in a 911 R model. The one piece calipers must have predated the 917 3 piece units. What size on the rear pistons?
Nick, Do you mind if I use your pics at my brake site? They would be an interesting addition. rallyman, thanks, The trailing arms can be modified but aren't any longer because it's so much easier to modify the caliper.

Here's a drawing of the only Ate 4 piston caliper that has 3.5" mount that I could find.
![]() Nick, what pads are you going to use, what pistons are in the rear set, do the rears have the same mount as the fronts? I've added your pics to my brake page and would like to update the data section.

Bill
all 4 calipers are the same, with 3.5" mountings and 38 mm pistons. They are not the ATE calipers pictured. I hope to use Turbo 3.3 pads. |
