best fender mount oil coooler setup (3.6 swap into 911 sc)
Good morning everyone.
After many months of waiting, my 95 3.6 engine has arrived! WOOT! I can finally start my cars transformation and get back out on the track. The car is a 1981 sc, I do around 5-10 DE weekends each year with around 5000 or so street miles, I have a front mount oil cooler that will be installed but im looking to keep the new engine nice and safe (cool) all around. Question. What is the best FENDER MOUNT oil cooler for this application? will I need a fan on a switch for around town driving? (or will I be ok with just two oil coolers? I may drive in traffic and would hate to have heat issues. thanks! ![]() ![]()

Two Carrera oil coolers - one on each side - works well. And the fan switch is not a bad idea if you see yourself stuck in traffic, even for regular 964 and 993 drivers.

Also consider adding a few discreet holes to the underside of your fiberglass bumper blade similar to what the factory did on the Carrera front bumper. Also make sure your engine tin seals up against the chassis tightly and there are no/minimal air holes between the topside of the engine and the underside of the car. Have fun! |

You will want a fan if you get stuck in traffic and can't get out of it. It's no fun to sit on the side of the road in the sun to allow your engine to cool down.
I believe the stock Carrera coolers come with fans attached. I would wire them up to a temp sensor to kick on at maybe 210°F. I would also wire them to a manual override switch just in case. They should both be on relays, fused and wired to the battery. I have yet to dig into this myself, so I don't have any good specifics... |

Use the factory fog light switch. It's already relayed too- which is quite ironic considering the headlights are NOT relayed in the original Porsche wiring scheme.

^hum... thanks for that bit of info- I installed a rennline dash, so I will need to figure that all out- wiring has not been my best suit but I think I can figure that out- the fogs are off the stock with the turn singles right?
I though about that elephant racing kit, however I really felt the front mount with the iroc bumper would be better than 2 fender mounts- sooooo...................... I could use a stock Carrera cooler, however wouldn't an aftermarket Setrab be better?> any opinions on this? . . . . . . |

I agree that you will want a fan when you're stuck in traffic with no airflow. You may only need a fan on the passenger side. I have a '95 3.6 with VRAM installed and a second cooler added in the driver's side fender. I have the foglights out and temps are great.. until stuck in traffic. I got the Elephant fan kit and installed it recently. A couple of things I learned. First the fan doesn't fit without changing the fender support. Chuck said it would be tight but fit however it didn't on my car. It's not the horns that are in the way, it's the fender-to-valence bracket itself. The Pelican tech article on this has the part numbers and photos. I purchased the Carrera horns from our host to open up the space and they work great. If you get the fan install kit it has the wiring and relays and makes the install very simple. I also added an override switch. I don't have a rear wiper so I got that switch from Porsche and it installs between the left 2 gauges. There is a cutout under the vinyl you can feel by pressing carefully. Stealth install and works great.

I've hit dual fender oil coolers in my 83 with 3.6 conversion. The right side had a fan, but it was not coming in from time to time. After I fixed the reason why it wasn't coming on (loose connection on the temp sensor) I decided it was cheap insurance to add a fan on the left side cooler.
Chuck at elephant warned me to use a smaller fan, since the bump for the battery box reduced area on that side considerably. Now, the car runs cool all the time. Very happy. |

I bought an Earl's cooler with big AN-16 fittings on it. No fan yet. Seemed like it would.block a lot of the airflow for the few times I might need it.

I swapped in only a 3.2, but Elephant's cooler and finned lines were enough to keep the engine cool at all times with no fan. I'm rarely stuck in traffic, however. The longest the car sat idling was usually gridding up for an Autocross.
