What engine crossmember and tins do I need for a 3.6 conversion?

Hey all,

I get my 3.6 on Friday, and I need to start the conversion process to fit into my 69 911T. I'm told I need a new crossmember and I need some tins to start with so I can modify them. Anyone know which ones I can use? Our host sells the Rennline RSR version, but I'm not sure if that will work.

Also, do I start with 3.2 tins and modify from there?

Thanks. This is question 20 of 356 in regards to this engine swap.

I used the 3.6 tins on both of my swaps (74 and 84). I also used the Rennline engine grace:

mreid, that's good news! Did you use just the crossmember, or does it need a new pulley cover as well? And what mods did you need to make for the tins?

If you keep the 3.6 engine mount console and crossbar, you will need to modify the cross bar or "bow/bend" it forward to bolt up to the motor mounts. It's because the console is deeper and sits further to the rear. I took this pic from your previous thread, showing a modified crossbar. I have the same modified bar on my 3.6 in my '80SC and it works great. The plan/diagram is somewhere on this forum in one of the transplant threads. If I can find it i'll let you know. Also, I have a 964 3.6 in my car and used the 3.6 tins with absolutely no problems or
modification.

here's the drawing I used (thanks to forum) to mod my 964 crossbar

and here's a better pic of the results and fitment. I also reinforced the ends of the crossbar with 1/8" plate steel and then drilled a few holes in it to lighten.

I did trim my 964 tins on the corners as seen here.....to clear a weld-flange on the
'83 SC body. This "cutout" of the tins also allowed me to access the mounting bolts
from below.....not required but seemed a benefit at the time.

Good job pdtweeks, I knew someone would come up with that drawing!
Here are some construction pics of the modification. (not mine) I purchased my bar
already modified from a Pelican.

I used a console and brace from a 3.0/3.2. Bolts right up. I removed the heat shield from the rear engine tin and welded up all the holes. Everything then bolted right into place.

I had to cut/bend/weld/reinforce the 3.0/3.2 mount that I used. I could 'flex' it to fit, but I wanted the bolts to drop straight in easily.

Also think about where you want to mount your coils. I welded on a plate at the same time to mount my coils. This is the best photo I can find right now and don't have the car nearby to get a better pic. Look on the lower left. Then think about your plug wire lengths from the distributors, etc. Some mount the coils on the left side of the engine bay.

That's a good way for the OP to go, as it looks like his car is a bit of a backdate/hotrod.
I had to retain the 3.6 console and bar to continue to use the AC mount.

If I remember correctly, the 3.0/3.2L mount eliminates the A/C mount. So it is cleaner too...

That is so true, but in a later car like my SC, with all the creature comforts, I needed to keep AC. I live in Ga, and the heat is oppresive! LOL
Besides, if I ever wanted to sell my car here in the south, not having air is a non starter!

I think I need to source a 3.0/3.2 console then. I can get the Rennline RSR crossmember to bolt onto it. I'm also in need of 3.0 engine tin, right?

No I used the 3.6L tins with the 3.2 console. The 3.6L tins have holes, etc for your lower plug wires. There will be gaps though that you have to fill. My guess is that it'll be easier to use the 3.6L tins than adapting the 3.0 tins to your motor. Other opinions?

I have the rear and the side 3.6 tins. I don't have the console or the crossbar. So, if I get that rennsport RSR crossmember, all I need is a 3.0/3.2 console to bolt it up to. That sound right to you guys?

Yes, and different studs to mount the console.

Ok, roger that. Thanks.

I'm in the process of doing the same conversion and have some questions for peeps that have already done this. I am going to use a 964 crossmember, console, and tins. I'm going to modify the crossmember as shown in post #7 of this thread. Questions:

Do I need to add a spacer to the crossmember in order to lower the engine to fit? If so, how far?

Did anyone modify the 964 console to create a cover for the crank pulley or did you run it as-is? The 964 console really doesn't provide much protection and I wonder if it will seal properly once installed.

Thanks in advance! This is my first conversion ever and I am shooting in the dark on a lot of stuff.

trying to revive this thread as i’m doing a 964 3.6 swap on my 71. can anyone post more pics of the concole differences between the 3.0/3.2 and one from an earlier car like from a 71? looking online i see its interchangeable from 65-83. i hear the depth is the key difference and can mean dropping the motor to change the fan belt .

can someone also repost the mod uwanna or pdtweaks posted? they’re not showing up anymore.

thanks
