Transporting a 911 w/ transmission only
Here's what happens when you do and don't properly secure the transmission. Only "supported" by the axles, the shift rod repeatedly bangs into the tunnel opening making it into an egg while being transported on a flat bed or trailer.
Can't be good for the transmission either. This is the third car I've found like this in a year. ![]() Last edited by Shaun 84 Targa; 07-02-2015 at 04:39 PM.. |

My car has the same bump. I read that it can be from someone pulling the engine and trans and not paying attention to where the trans input shaft is while lowering the engine down.

Why anyone would do that is beyond me. It's just another 15 bolts or so to pull the gearbox.
Did you find a '74 targa roller for me Shaun?

Nick, I suppose that could be too but stretching that metal takes a lot of pressure...or continuous hammering. I know it happens the way I outlined because one was delivered to me in this way, with this damage, and the hole was perfectly round before leaving the shop.
Matt, I don't get it either. And all you'd really have to do is stuff some shop rags in the hole as a buffer or drill a .5" hole through a tennis ball and stuff that in. I'm going to make a steel puck to fit inside and curved tool to hammer on the outside after heating up with a torch. Problem is the fuel lines are inches away. Sending you a PM on a roller. |

This is how I received my '73. After putting it all back together I realized that the 'selector shaft' was sufficiently bent that the seal could not make up for it and leaked past. It probably would have been okay if they at least hung the bellhousing from the crossmember. This was a dealership's handiwork.
