Need advice on new wheels
I'm planning to change my 6x16 & 7x16 Fuchs to 7x16 & 8x16. I would like opinions and information concerning this. I don't know about the different type offsets and other concerns to worry about.
I'm not reusing my old 7x16's b/c they don't match. The rears were stolen and the PO put these on. One looks deeper than the other but it's the outer rim that is different. They both end up w/ the same offset and neither have spacers so I don't know what's up w/ this. I honestly don't know if both are real Fuchs or not. I'm at stock height right now but I'm planning on lowering soon. I'm also planning on new tires but obviously I want to figure out the wheels first. Rolling the fenders is not an option I want to entertain. So, what should I be concerned about? Do you think this is a good move or should I just keep the stock sizes and get a rear that matches? What about replicas? The car is so far just street but I'd like to autocross/track in the future. Thanks for help,

Ryan,
Pull the back wheels off and see if they have a Porsche P/N stamped on the back of a paddle with a little fox head stamp beside. I think it's Sherwood's site that has the wheel P/N xref. At least you'll know what you have then. The 7's and 8's haven't shown any fender rub at all at stock ride height. Mark ![]() |

Surflvr,
Been catching any waves lately? I've been doing some locally here in M.B., but nothing great Great idea upgrading to 16x7,8's--that's what i did ![]() Might be hard to get around the lip rolling if you also want to lower it. Seems the most common lip that rubs is Left Front. I was initially reluctant to roll any fenders, but ended up having my fronts rolled without any problems. My car is lowered to 25.25" front and 24.75" Rear(slightly below Eurospec). Forget the replica's. No way do you want to put cheap, heavy wheels on your 911. Never heard anything good about them. If cost is an issue (when isn't it?), then take your time locating a set of wheels at a swap meet (eg Pomona, German Autofest) or ebay. WheelEnhancement (mentioned above) are great if you're rich. Last yr, they quoted me over $700. EACH for 16x8. A good price for the set (2)16x7 and (2)16x8 would be $1000. Got my set off ebay, and had them refinished by Al Reed (Anaheim) for a total of $950. Thanks for the info guys. I won't lower below euro so hopefully I can get away w/ it. I guess what matters the most is what size tires work best. What sizes are you guys running, or wish you were running? Would I still run 225x50x16 on the 7" rim up front? That seems like a lot of tire up there. If I put a 205x55x16 on the 7" rim would it work and look OK? I'm using these combos b/c it's really all I know. Let me know what doesn't work too so I don't do anything stupid. Thanks!

Ryan,
I'm running 205-55 in front and 225-50 in the rear. That's the same size that was on my 6/7" set. You may want to search previous threads, but I think that's about max in front. I have read that people are doing 245-45's with 8's on the rear. I think you can also play with rear camber to stop the rub if it shows up. Mark |

Same size as Mark W. 205/55, 225/50 Bridgestone RE730
Not sure which tire you're going with, but someone posted a few wks ago that TireRack is having a blowout (no pun) sale on Yokohama AVS Intermediates. I believe for the above mentioned sizes, they're under $100./each. I've used these tires on my BMW for over a decade, and love 'em. Just wanted a change for the 911. Mike |

Sorry for changing the topic, but can anyone explain what is involved in lip rolling. Does it require a respray? Can it be done with the fenders on the car?

I am running the same as Mark Wilson. I love the look, it makes the car. I had to roll both fronts and the LR rubs also. I haven't rolled that yet.
My lip paint did crack when I rolled the fenders so i had to touch up the lips. There are a few ways to roll the lips. You can have someone do it for you. You can do it with a bat or something else round. There is a mach. that you can rent. I took a leather covered oak chunk of wood and then I backed the outer fender with a shot bag. And I bent the lip up. I think my paint is very brittle so it cracked. I don't know if the other method won't crack the paint.

To roll your fenders with a baseball bat (wood only) use the tire as a fulcrum and "roll" the bat back and forth using just enough pressure each time to "slightly" bend the back of the lip onto itself. Start in the center and with each pass expand the arc. The key to not harming the paint is small increments. At no point or time should you use the bat as a lever or pry bar.
Good luck.

Has anyone gone to 16x7 front and 16x9 rears on an SC or early eighties Carrera? Curious if the 16x9s will fit on the rear without any modification, and what tire sizes should be considered.

It's reported that 9's w/ 245 fits fine.
Mine's 7+8 and I'm below Euro, only had to roll the LF fender. I didn't trust myself or anyone with the bat concept, took the car to a panel fabrication guy and had him hammer and dolly the fender into place. No issues now. rjp

PS-
Car was at Euro before and no issues with rub at any corners. 205 + 225 in rear. rjp
