rescue project question

I am installing a 79 engine in an 84 911 in an attempt to bring this stripped down roller back to life. I have the engine essentially complete and rebulit with refreshed CIS, distributor, and alternator.

I have a oil reservoir that came with the car, not sure its correct for the year or not. but now I am faced with mating the engine and reservoir oil ports and am unsure of what to do. I purchased new " S Hose' and oil breather hose from our host, along with new gaskets and the bottom drain plug for the reservoir. but near the bottom on the face towards the engine and the front of the car, there is a protruding outlet from the oil reservoir that is a male treaded part. Can anyone instruct me on what this connection is supposed to attached to? is it for a turbo? for the non-existant front oil cooler that I dont have on this car? or something else?

ANy help is GREATLY appreciated! you might be able to see the outlet on the attached diagram from our host. it is just barely visible near the bottom on the front facing side of the oii res.

JIM

That fitting ( on my 79) goes to the external oil thermostat.

thanks pete! can you tell me where hose # 9 goes ? since I dont have the front oil cooler I also don have an external thermostat,, so it would seem I need to connect the oil res to wherever hose nine attaches to the engine??????

Jim,

The oil line connects from oil tank inner/upper fitting of the auxiliary thermostat shown in Pete's illustration. Do you have a reference manual like Bentley or others? It is imperative that you have atleast one good reference shop manual for your particular car/engine.

Hose #9 would connect to the hose directly below it ( no # assigned to it) or hose #18 in your first diagram. Both hoses in the diagrams go to the same place on the left side of the engine case but are made ( routed differently) for different year cars.

Missing parts........

Jim,

You would need the following parts and many more for your project:

auxiliary air thermostat
oil line from engine to auxiliary thermostat
oil line from auxiliary thermostat to oil tank
2 brass oil lines from auxiliary thermostat to auxiliary cooler
2 short flex oil lines between to auxiliary cooler & bass oil lines.
auxiliary cooler (Carrera cooler)

What happen to these parts? Do you have a complete dash with gauges?

THe car did not come with these parts. so I am going to plumb it somehow. There is no oil cooler in the front of the car, which I understand was an option. so do I even need an aux thermostat????? I am leaning towards no. just need to connect all of the ports so I dont have any leaks, Do you think it will work? I figure I can add the aux oil cooler at a later date if I want. Right now funds are low.

I do have the gauges, in a box. Havent gotten that far yet. right now working to get the engine in, so I can get it wired and running. cleaning the gas tank out and adding new fuel pump, filter, and accumulator. The car was stripped bare, thats why I am buying all these expensive parts.

Sounds like you are missing all of the external oil lines. You are going to need the lines ahead of and behind the thermostat(need that too). I dont think you can get away without the critical parts of the oil system. Most of them aren't cheap but can probably be found by placing wtb ads right here on pelican.

jimbeaux911 -

Its probably too late to help you with this, but the cross-under line shown below #9 in the 2nd diagram that is not identified is PN 911 107 722 00 and was used on 73-74 models w/o front cooler.

This is a one-piece assy. Porsche discontinued this and went to their current replacement using a 911 107 728 00 Hose and the common cross-under hardline 911 107 739 10.

I have a re-hosed original (107 722 00) in stock if anyone else is in the same dilemma.

jimbeaux911-

Read this over and realized you have the engine oil line #18 as shown in your first diagram.

This is the hose I expect is or was needed........

I hope it all worked out.
