Is my heater blower weird?
My car is an '89 911 w/ the 3-speed fan switch and levers between the seats. The problem is, the fan only comes on if the oil temp gauge gets up to the first bar (which isn't really all that often). Fan is inop most of the time. It got hot here today, so the oil temp rose and I thought I'd try the fan just for kicks. It worked great! As soon as the engine cools below the first bar though, no more heater fan. Is this a sensor problem? Everything's fine only if the engine's running fairly hot. (I still get good heat with a very cool engine, just no fan).
Thanks in advance for any help.... David Cate |

If you only have the 3 position switch, there is no sensor. I'd look into it. This seems odd...
Are there any other electrical gremlins that occur with the cold/hot issue? Does your stereo get enough juice when the motor is cold?

hmmm, unless they changed it between 88 and 89 it should come on at any time as long as the car is running. The only thing that I can imagine is the relay in the back is bad, but the 89 could be different.

I posted this same problem and never got any response. I am interested to hear what you get back. At least I know I am not crazy...

Do you think someone may have wired the heater blower to the front oil cooler fan? The rear blower can can improve cooling when the motor is hot.
Check the power at the blower connection. It should come on whenever you raise the two levers (with car running).

I bought the car about a month ago and everything was fine then, the blower came on as soon as you started the car. But, it was a one owner garage queen, owned by a surgeon, and only had 28,000 mi on it. In the month I've owned it, I've already had to replace the intermittent wiper relay. (I've also driven it 3500 miles!) My sense is it may the blower relay in the engine bay that needs replacing. I'm very much a novice, but it makes sense to me that if this stuff hasn't been used very much, it tends to have some squawks when it's rolling again. I'll swap it out with my fuel pump relay this weekend (I read somewhere that they're the same relay, but I'll do more research first) and see if the motor is getting power. If it's not the same relay, I'll underwrite a $100 experiment by buying the new relay (UGHH). I hate for ANYTHING to not be in working on this car! it's like some kind of a disease! I know airplanes that are "sitters" will require more maintence, at least until it gets used alot. My guess is that these cars are much the same. I'll let you know what the problem is when I find it...I'll will find it. Thanks for the help so far, and if anyone has any more ideas, you'd humble me by sharing your thoughts. Once again, hot engine, good blower, cold engine, no blower.
Yours in the fast lane... David |
