G50 conversion project Many pics

I have started the conversion. Kevin S. wanted me to do a little write up of the project. So here goes.

I had to make a tool from an old clutch disk. (Thanks Richard.) It is used to hold the input shaft. The factory manual does an ok job at disasembling but it does seem like a few pages are missing. You will need a big ass puller to get it apart. You will also need a press and a bearing separator. And a few other tools. Here are some pics. I forgot to take pics before I sent the case and shaft out for machining. Doh Oh yea, go slow and you don't have to take the syncros apart. You can just slid the whole syncro off.

I sent the parts for machining yesterday. I went with Protechnik in TX. I was also considering Bobby Hart at Califonia Motorsports. Both are reasonable price and turnaround. Most of the other people I called where stupid expensive and had really bad attitudes

Bite me

More info please...are you shortening bellhousing to fit in car w/o cutting rear compartment or are you just dissasembling tranny for fun?

Great pics!

(I'm trying to learn something here )

Yes, I am shortening it to fit in my car. And I did have fun once I figured out how it came apart. I was sweatin till I understood the tranny.

Richard, I cleaned the tranny before I started. It was covered in Cosm and dirt. I used this awful hand cleaner then I hosed it with hot water. It came out pretty clean

Detailed pictures like that make you appreciate the engineering that went into designing a transmission.

BTW, that has to be one of the cleanest tranny's I've ever seen.

So they shorten the tranny w/o changing internals? What about driveshafts, do they need to get cut/shortened too?

Thanx.

Goran,

The input shaft gets shortened the same amount as the bellhousing. That is why the tranny needs to come completely apart.
