If this were local, I might pick it up as a starting point for a real RS project...
Odd car, isn't it? -Wayne

The ultra-rare Bosch engine, combined with the $10k transmission, makes this a great bargain. I'm gonna let you have it, Wayne.

For what it's worth. It's an RSR 2.8 body.
Lot's of unknowns though. If it were local you could examine it. As it is it's very iffy. That color with the car setup right would be very nice though. Bobby |

Trouble is, no one is willing to part with their project for a reasonable price...

The car in nostatic's post is realistically (and easily) worth $25k+.... IMO. Anyone who has built one of these (as I have) can tell you the same. I really doubt if I car like this comes along for a song. And it's not exactly a project car either.... what's left to finish? If anyone on this BBS was looking for a great R gruppe type car, here it is.

Stock 3.2? For that $$$ I want a 993 engine. Or at least some mods to the 3.2...

rust free early 911 in good shape ($10k)
additional exterior mods: flares, fiberglass, ducktail w/ paint ($3k) suspension ($3k) wheels/tires ($2k) transmission: LSD, gears ($3-4k) interior: seats, belts, cage, door panels, etc ($3k) engine, 3.2 freshly rebuilt ($8k bare minimum) here I'm already way over $25k, and I've lo-balled a bunch of areas to do a really, nice quality job on one of these cars is not cheap... never has been... never will be to take it to the extreme, just look at Randy Well's car with a 3.6, I'd add $2k more again, this is my experience and IMO

Doug, would the $25k figure drop some if you sell the old engine, gearbox, tires and wheels originally on the car? I'm wondering how much that buys you.
FWIW - I actually called the seller (see nostatic's link, above) to get a sense of what the reserve was set at. Let's just say that it's consisent with some of the comments here. I've been actively shopping for an early car and this one would be great, if only my budget would have permitted it.

In my experience, depending on the shape of said "removed" parts, you never get all that much for them.
a set of used 15x6 Fuchs - $500-600 used 2.4T engine - $2000 max (E & S $1000-1500 more) transmission - I'm just upgrading what I have So you could knock another $3k off the $25 I'm sure others who have assembled killer RS replicas with upgraded engines can chime in on how much they think the conversion takes. The only thing I know for sure, is that it ALWAYS costs more than you initially think. Think about just upgrading the suspension for instance: larger hollow torsion bars, nice sway bars fore & aft (like Charlie bars), new shocks all four corners, aluminum trailing arms, new bushings, a correct 4 wheel alignment, and on and on and.... I think you start to get the idea When I pull up the receipts for putting together Kermie, I get whoozy!?!?!? Would I do it again, knowing how much it would utimately cost, absolutely!

I agree with skinnerd- I haven't batted an eye at any of my expenses thus far. My fiancee gives me plenty of ***** about, but is also very enthusiastic about the car and doesn't complain about the expenses.
We both know I'll never get the money out though- as far as we're concerned, each $ spent is expense; gone forever. Hey, you gotta have hobbies. -d

Doug, Kermie is very cool...I'm green with envy! If it costs about $25k to build an RS replica w/ 3.2L, what should someone expect to pay for one that's already done?
Regards,

I'll counter:
- $3500 for 911T project car with minimal rust (not $10K). - $8000 for 993 engine - $1500 for 915 (or if you have one lying around) - External mods (flares, etc) + paint $7500. - 911SC/Carrera brakes ($1000) It's not going to be a track car, so no need for the suped-up suspension mods, roll cage, or sport seats... -Wayne

I thought the car I posted looked like a pretty nice setup. I'd be interested in more comments from R-gruppers. It's at 17K now...seems like $20K would be a nice price for a seemingly well sorted car.

Mr. Skinner is quite modest.
His car....well, this one....is a killer autocrosser, built (I assume) to do a job....much more than another pretty face. I know he's done several "jobs" on me What the hay....his "other car" has done the same, tho not by so large a margin.

I figure in today's market the car on eBay should go for around $20K...

waynes' world....
I forgot....Wayne is in the position to get parts "at cost". If you're really interested in joining the "R" world, HP and torque are KING. Ask your moderator, Jack O what he has in his "hotrod". If that's not sufficient, quess what Randy W has in his "KING OF THE CONES" / RGruppe car ( the ultimate). I have a bit of an idea, by what I've invested in my "lightweight" Rgruppe backdate.
BTW..the fun is in the construction...!! Good luck Wayne...we (Rgruppe), are waiting for your application ?? |
