How Fast Have You Gone?

Anecdotes, please. What's the fastest you've ever gone, in what vehice, where, etc.

Me, I went just over 165 mph in a jiffy last fall on a narrow two-lane forest road between Darrington and Rockport, WA, while blowing away a pack of pesky sportbikes on my ex-Kawasaki ZX-12R--you know, your average 545-lb, 182-HP, 190-MPH, 9.9 sec. /145 mph in the 1/4 mile motorsickle. Nothing could live with that thing. Nothing. It was just a matter of pulling out to pass at around 70 mph in 2nd, flat on the gas and bang a couple of shifts, and it seemed like just a twinkle when the speedo needle informed me yes, we're rapidly going through 165 mph. Shut it down, for God's sake.

The adrenaline rush lasted well over 8 hours.

I've only done 125 in the 911 so far--easy-peasy. I think she'll do 150, but am more interested in how she conducts herself in the twisties.

Only 145 or so on tarmac, but I've gone 120+ on gravel. It feels like driving on tarmac with random toe-in or toe-out at both ends every couple of seconds.

Oregon is a bit backwards..65 is the I-5 speed limit here. Of course, everyone obeys...

65 here. We have laws in Ohio.

Well, okay, there was that one time on I-71 between Cincinnati and Columbus where I had it up to 145. Redlined in 5th. On the track, maybe 130.

147 mph between Annapolis MD and Washington DC on Route 50 in an '85 Corvette. Factory said she would do 155 but I could never get it there.

153.6 mph in a 1999 BMW 540i 6-speed (hit the electronic limiter).

149.6 mph in my '86 930 (ran out of road).

Both speed readings came from my handheld Garmin eMap GPS as the speedometer readings were a bit high.

Ya beat me to it, JA

I've had my 80sc up to 85mph. Maxed out the speedo. Can you believe Porsche was mandated by the US gov't to put 85 mph speedos in their cars? I took it up to redline in 5th just to show them--I'm guessing it was 140mph with the top off. FUN AND STUPID!

I think the nominal cruising speed for a Boeing 767 is 530MPH (850KPH, Mach 0.8). That's about as fast as I've ever gone.

Oh, you meant on land!

Well, late one winter evening I was curious to see how much boost a '78 930 required to maintain an indicated 150MPH on a flat stretch of barren I-40. I was amazed that it only took 0.5 bar. And yet I imagine the car's maximum speed was somewhere between 170 and 180MPH (at 1.0 bar). Goes to show how non-linear wind resistance is.

BTW, the factory speed limiter of a '95 BMW M3 is a *violent* 137.

140 in the 911 (indicated on the speedo, but i'm guessing it was probably about 5 mph off) and a clocked 185 as a passenger in a VERY fast twinturbo 300ZX.

later,

amir

Great shot, Rob--where were you? Somewhere in E. Washington, 97 or 3 perhaps?

I don't drive the porsche. I don't want an accidental clocking of 16 in a 15 to ruin my insurance rates.

Do people really go fast in these things too?
