901/911 Transmission clutch cable guide repair?

Help! I've got a 1971 and when I tried to take the car out this morning, the clutch wasn't disengaging. I was finally able to check under the car and saw that the clutch cable bracket that is part of the side cover is busted. When the clutch is pressed in, the cable housing is moving thru what was left of it. I'm just glad this didnt break when I was on the road. I found replacement brackets for the 915 transmission, but not the 911 transmission. Does anyone know of a simple bolt on solution? Can I use the 915 ones? Maybe something from a beetle? Thanks!

How bad is it? I assume you know the 1970 and 1971 clutches work "backwards" in that the cable housing is the thing that actually moves and does the work releasing the clutch. They normally will still work somewhat ok even with some slop.

There are several ways to fix. You can epoxy a bushing into the oversize hole, you can mill it off and bolt on another chunk of metal with the proper size hole.

901/911 Transmission clutch cable guide repair

I had the same problem with my 70 and fixed it by taking the plate off the transmission (yes, you will need to pull the CV shaft off, drain the tranny, etc.) I found a custom fabrication house that specializes in welding more exotic metals as the transmission is made out of I believe an aluminum/alloy formulation. The welding house can identify the material. Anyway, they resurfaced the stub and welded a tab onto the plate, then drilled out a hole into which the clutch cable housing slides......................

I did it about 15 years ago and it's been working fine. Make sure you find a fabricator/welding house that you feel confident in.

Good Luck!!
