Question I can't get the nuts off the top of my Bilstein shocks to install a camber strut kit!

Okay, I ordered the Weltmeister camber brace kit. I go out tonight to work on the installation, and I can't get past getting the main nuts off of the tops of the shocks. They just turn the entire strut. Is there a trick to doing this? Something to keep the shock from turning? I tried heat to no avail, but I didn't spend a lot of time doing that as I didn't want to burn something up.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

impact wrench. or grab the outside of the top washer with channel-locks as you turn the nut. the washer has a tooth in it that sits in a notch in the shaft.

Sometimes holding the shock tower cover in the wheel well while someone else turns will work. I had my wife do this!

Some of the old shocks have an allen wrench socket in the shaft. If it does put an allen wrench in the top with a box wrench on the outside and pull. Air wrench works better...

I agree with John, the impact wrench cut my 30 minutes of cursing to a 2 second exercise. Soak the nut with PB blaster the night before. Use the same spanner wrench you use to tighten the shock insert to hold the washer underneath the nut. If you don't have a spanner wrench you'll have to use something else to hold that washer.

I (successfully) used a pipe wrench to hold the large washer while I took the nut off. TIP: I loosely duct taped some cardboard to the fender as a precaution against a wrench slipping off and gouging the paint.

Thanks guys, all good comments. I'll try it again on Saturday. I did shoot it with PB last night, so that will help. I've been thinking about the impact wrench, guess this is the excuse I needed!

Hello

Depending on the used version you should have a 22mm spanner sized M14 x 1,5 nut. Either a selflocking unit or a normal unit with a secure washer under it.

You need a chissel to refold the securing washer.

The washer ia aviable from Porsche under 900 038 002 01 and costs 1,50€.

Most aftermarked shock pakages contain a selfsecuring nut wich is also aviable from Porsche under 900 910 055 01 and costs 3€.

To loose the nut a powertool helps. Also there is a special toool to holt the big dished washer under the nut ( Thats why there is a cutout in the edge ).
