There are a zillion posts on clutches, but I couldn't find one that matched my situation

I have an 89 carrera (G50 transmission- hydraulic clutch) with 82,000 miles. Clutch and related parts have not been replaced. About a month ago as I was drivin down the road, I shifted and the clutch pedal was dramically lighter to press down. The clutch seemed to engage at the same point and the pedal returned to the top normally. There was no slippage in the clutch. After about 20 miles of driving it returned to it's normal heavier self. Today when driving home from work it did the same thing again a couple miles from home. I will see if it returns to its heavier feel tomorrow. Any ideas as to what is going on? TIA. Tom |

Have you checked your brake fluid resevoir? It serves the hydraulics for the clutch, too.

My 87 cab did the same thing sporadically before the clutch release bearing finally failed. It lasted about 3 months and then dropped to the floor, fortunately in a parking lot and not on the road.
