Cylinder 3. What is sensor and how do I get it out?
After sitting on the engine stand for the last year it is time for the rebuild to begin. Having some trouble removing tthe sensor located on the forward side of cylinder 3. I cannot get a wrench on it and it looks like it is meant to be taken out with a socket due to the cutouts in the cooling fins. The wire does not seem like it has an electrical connection fitting allowing it to slide off the end and I don't want to pull to hard. On the other end of the wire it looks like it has been cut at some point in time and then rejoined and heat taped. Is this the correct method?

It's the CHT (cylinder head temperature) sensor. Not sure but there might be a special socket similar to a spark-plug socket that you put on it and then use an open box wrench on that. We use a deep 14mm 3/8" impact socket which has a long slot cut in the side with a cutoff disc to clear the wire. The early ones are 13mm. A non-impact socket is too flexy when cut. Don't over tighten when you reinstall it or it can shear off in the head.

I just did that on my 86, I took an old snap-on 14mm and had a friend cut a long slot in it with a lathe. Worked great.

looks like yours is the newer 2 wire version. When my one wire version went bad, I simply cut the wire, used a "standard" socket and replaced with the updated 2 wire version.
You might want to do a cost/benefit comparison between modding the socket and simply replacing the sensor? |
