Question 1987 911 - engine pad replacement

Original engine pad for my 1987 911 Targa basically deteriorated to small segments and dried up form. It's fully out now but a decent amount of adhesive/glue remains.

Any suggestions how to best/safely remove without scratching the paint underneath or any engine components? Engine is in the car (not dropped).

And am thinking about simply not replacing the pad too...................

thanks,

Dave

When I changed mine I left most of the old glue. I installed the new pad without any glue and it is working fine.

Same here as Fast Mike when i did mine. Got the "thick pad" via app biz from our host and installed with no glue per App. Has been in for years, it does not move. I only removed the easy hunks and bits left behind before re-install. Don't stress on cleaning it up, the factory glue was not intended to be removable.
A partial engine drop would likely make access for install easier.
If you don't replace the pad with something, you'll have to look at a really ugly fire-wall or make a huge effort to clean.

If it's the "Ultimate Pad", it's installed wrong. The foil side on the Ultimate pad is installed facing the firewall. (per AppBiz, the black side out is meant to appear as factory look)
If it's the double foil sided pad, it's AOK.

Spend the extra on the Ultimate, it's 3 ply and a bit better at sound isolation. You'll be happy you did!

Thought I remember App Biz saying foil toward engine to reflect the heat. That's how mine is and it looks great. Head scratch whether foil also on the other side, been too long.
I like the foil look.

I discussed it with AppBiz owner and he said the Ultimate is designed to install foil side to firewall. Meant to give original appearance with black foam side out.
Don't know if he still offers it, but he used to offer a pad with foil on both sides, but that's not the Ultimate.
However yours is installed is your choice and if you're happy with it, that's what counts. Other than opting for original appearance, I'm sure it makes little difference how it is installed.
When I installed mine, I was confused so I called AppBiz and he gave me the above info.

I found that if you remove most items that are close to the fire wall that are in your way. Such things as the filter box, fan and tin work, including other items, that it then really makes it much easier to do. About 1/2 -3/4 of an hour to remove the items but it is well worth it.

I also left the old glue but also used 3M's spray adhesive that they recommend for hood insulation on 'normal?' front engine vehicles. When it sticks that's it so make a trial run and make sure that your top edge is correct if you start sticking it at the bottom first.
