Best hood prop rod solution?

Every 911 I see has an umbrella, a cardboard christmas wrapping paper tube, or broomstick under the lid. Aside from the gas struts, what type of prop rod do you recommend?

(I need to know before I throw out all the christmas wrapping paper we used this season).

thin wood dowel. Cheap and easy to replace. Can "customize" (cut) to your preferred length. Fits easily in the luggage boot up front.

I will, however, eventually sort this out and get my engine compartment lid working as it came from the factory. Not a pressing issue as I have other more pressing things to address. Like going for a drive!

Happy new year!

Thanks guys. I don't know how I missed that other thread.

Ultimate strut looks like the ticket.

Yep I just break down and buy a new set every few years when they wear out. I just get the OEM ones as the heavy duty ones don't seem to last any longer.

In the process of rebuilding my 911 after my fire the body shop called me and said that the hood wouldn't stay up and they believed it was due to the fire cooking the gas strut. Sadly I had to tell them "no" it's always like that.

i've looked at a ton of cars for sale recently and every one (not a single exception) had their version of some funky prop rod stowed under the hood. Does nobody fix these things? Do cardboard tubes never wear out?

Sheesh

Ultimate Strut Not so Ultimate

I went with ultimate strut for a year and have to say its a PITA. In the way, another thing to do when you open the hood. Takes longer to install than just replacing the factory struts. I'd sell you mine but probably cost more to ship than its worth. Definately don't do the one in the engine compartment, its always in the way if working in there! Also, the method of holding it in place on the hood (not shown in the literature for good reason) is very poor.

I took a telescoping boat hook and cut the hook off and replaced it with a crutch tip. It adjusts to whatever length I need and collapses into a nice tidy size for storage.

Sorry - I gotta laugh a bit after reading this thread - The gas strut that supports my engine deck lid is the ONLY thing that works correctly right now on my 911.

Never Replace Another Hood Shock
The Lift-Lock is awesome and will never need replacement.

Hi Gunzel, the whole lot cost about £14...$21.

Gas struts don`t work too well with a hood full of Cibies.

Added this hood prop several years back after growing tired of replacing so called heavy duty shocks every few years. You might finds something in a scrap yard that will work. I keep the loose end anchored with a strong magnet when not in use.
