B&B headers 3.2 running hot?

Has anyone after installing B&B headers with heater box noticed engine temps higher than before? I have never had a 911 run above the first white mark under normal driving conditions. Outside temp mid 80's.

Running hot..........

Probably need to check to see if the headers are causing it to run lean. If so, that could cause the higher heat temps.

It certainly will run hotter if the fuel mixture is not adjusted to suit. :)

Are you still running the Motronic or has it been switched to carbs? I can't see how B&B's would create a lean condition by themselves since the motronic adjusts the air fuel. I'd think your return line is picking up residual heat from the headers. Did you use the steel B&B oil line or insulate the existing rubber oil line?

Retro 08-02-2015 02:39 PM

Jeff at Rothsport did the set up. Check this picture. Looks like a metal return, that would be getting hot just above the headers. Right? Wanting to drive to RennWerks next week. Motronic. Do you think this could be the problem?

I put a metal heat shield between the metal feed line and the headers, you can get heat transfer, that pipe gets pretty hot.

Retro 08-02-2015 03:39 PM

you had the same set up? where did you attach the heat shield? Any insulation or just metal shield? Did it work? What were your temps before and after?

cabmandone 08-02-2015 03:48 PM

I don't think that line collecting heat is your problem. Are the lines to your front cooler both warm after you drive it for a while?

BTW, I was driving my stock setup today in the mid 80's and mine was running half way between the first and second line.

Retro 08-02-2015 03:55 PM

I just replaced the oil cooler thermostat thinking that was it. I drove it on a high 90's day and it was headed for the second white mark? So I replaced the thermostat. Didn't have another 100 degree day, but today on in the mid to high 80's above white line. This is the first hot weather I have driven in since the exhaust conversion. That is just too hot.

+ check your header gaskets/nuts are tight and verify your AFR. If too lean she will get too hot and could damage your engine.

Personally, I'd get concerned if it starts climbing quickly when you come to a stop. If it stays about the same temp I wouldn't worry about it myself. I wonder if the extra bends in the B&B metal line along with some heat transfer could be increasing temps?

I'd think if you're running lean you'd feel and hear some difference in the engine. I'd think you'd get a lean pop or something noticeable. Unless something in the motronic was messed (AFM or a chip) I'd find it really hard to believe you're lean.

Did Jeff put a custom chip in it made for headers?? Have you run the car on a chassis dyno to see what your AFR's are??

I would wrap that oil pipe with Aeroquip sleeve, at the very least, to help deflect radiated heat.

I would also make certain the front of the oil cooler is not partially obstructed with dirt, bugs and other flotsam.

I had a 930 run considerably hotter after B&Bs. The heater boxes were the same design. There were major gaps in the top sheet metal around the exhaust tubes that pumped hot air directly up against the heads. I ended up making slip in metal heat shields wrapped in heat blanket to get the temps down.

I have an 86 with B&B headers and heat. My temps run cool. No issues. I have driven 200 miles in 90+ degrees and the oil temperature never gets to 210 deg. I installed a SW chip at the same time.

b&b

I have had the same exhaust setup for 6 months now. Also have a sw chip and k&n cone. My dd is down so I have been driving the 911 daily to work about 40 miles round trip for the past 2 weeks. The weather has been pretty hot too, 95-100 DegF. The oil temp gauge seems to slowly rise just past the 210 DegF mark after sitting in some afternoon traffic.
I don't see a big difference from when the stock exhaust was installed but I'm still running hot due to aircon not working - ha. I may have to look into that soon. I also switched to Brad Penn oil. I think the engine runs a bit cooler now because of that.

B&B headers and engine temps

I noticed my average engine temps when down a little after I installed my B&B headers.
I have a SW chip too, and I feel the engine performs even better now with the headers.

I chose to wrap mine before installation.
Perhaps that has something to do with it.
On 100' days here in N Texas, in stop and go traffic, my temps barely get over the first white line (sorry, dont have a numeric Temp gauge)

^^^Nice exhaust set-up.

Off topic, but I think the bricks under your jackstands are oriented incorrectly, causing a higher risk of collapse. The holes should be facing up and down.

Elombard 08-03-2015 10:28 AM

I thought I noticed a decrease in engine temps with my B&Bs? especially in cold weather it seemed to take longer to warm up. Motor is totally stock 84 3.2 other than that.

What oil crossover line did you go too? What muffler are you running.

Retro 08-03-2015 10:40 AM

Going to buy a mechanical oil temp with capillary to stick in tank to verify accuracy.
So many opinions its confusing. Just checked front cooler for blockage its fine. Mechanic says engine oil thermostat check next.

No bricks, period, ever.
