voltage adjustment

i just stuffed some gel batteries and i need to get the volatge down to 13.6 -13.8. i have a 72 with a motorola regulator. base line was 14.6-14.7 volts. i loosened the screw and move the lower point(s) down towards the base. the voltage got down into the range needed , but after a short drive the voltage at the batteries had climbed back up. 14.5 not good for these batteries. i had just gotten the fresh batteries off the ups truck. 1. am i adjusting the regulator correctly. 2. am i rehashing an old post. 3. do i need to post a picture.
thanks.

sorry, for the double post.. i tried to kill it ,but it won't die
