Tires for 9" Fuchs

Hi all,
Its been a long time since I've had the time to even begin thinking about my 911. I have an 84 cab and I got it while I lived in Monterey. I regeared the transmission myself, replaced the rear axles while I was at it, and have done a variety of things to the car myself - all with the help f the folks on this great forum. Anyway, I just bought some 9 inch fuchs and want to put these on the back. I have 7's which were on the back and am putting these on the front. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could provide some input on what the tire sizes are that would be best for my back 9's. Its of course a narrow body 911

Mike

Best choice is 245/45-16. Not many choices left in that size, however. Some have tried 245/50-16, but those are considerably taller.

RE-11 is pretty much your last good street tire option.

And even those may be hard to find now, as I think Bridgestone has discontinued them as well.

I bought a full set of Toyo R888 from tire rack today for just that wheel combo. I don't plan on doing any driving in the cold or wet so it should be an ok combo.

245/45/16 and 205/55/16.

8" aren't a problem, can still use 225/50-16 on those.

They do fine in moderate rain too, I wouldn't worry about using them on a daily driver.

But keep it in garage if the temp is much below 40°F. Even Toyo Summer tires are nasty in cold weather, based on past experience. I can't imagine that tires they sell as track use would be much better when the pavement is cold.

Below freezing all summer tires should be kept in the garage.

My '87 Carrera has 16x7 up front and 16x9 in the rear. Fronts are 205/55R-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport SL, and the rears are 225/50R-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport SL. Purchased from Tire Rack.

These tires work just fine for my needs.

I'm running Kumho Ecsta 245/50R-16s out back on my 9s. Kumho runs small, in both section and width, so it ends up that the rolling diameter is about right.

Do you have any spacers installed? Any problems with rubbing? Did you have to roll the fenders? I might have to consider these when I need tires again. Thanks for this info.

No to all, and if I wanted, I could actually go wider. The problem is that Kumhos run narrow, so it could be an illusion of room. If I got the RE-11s in 245/45, they might actually be right at the limit.

Yup. 8"s comfortably run 225 to 245.

Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport SL 225/50 x16 are spec'd by the manufacturer for 6-8" wheels only

Kumho Ecsta 245/50R-16s There are many ECsta tires the first I could find in that size id the P31 which has a 25.7" OD when installed on a 7.5" wheel, they are only speced by the manufacturer for use on 7-8.5" wheels

For comparison a typical 225/50 x16 on a 7 is ~24.7" OD and a typical 245/45 x16 on an 8 is ~24.5" OD

the smallish 3 and 3.2 motors really like the shorter tires.

The whole point of spending the money fr 9s over 8s or 7s is to maximize performance

the wider wheel and wider lower 245/45 provide much more grip.

If you are into looks or just not into maximizing performance just stick w/ the 7 or 8

thanks you guys! i actually found these 9's here on this forum. they were the same style as my 7's and they were gorgeous! I found a brand new set of 8's through Stoddard Porsche and would have gone with these but they weren't the same style. I absolutely cannot wait to get them on my car! Performance and looks!!!!!!! Sooooooo excited!
