It does look elegant as it finishes the opening and i see what Singer are trying to achieve by adding this trim piece.

But Porsche didn't do this and i'm not so sure it serves any real function (sound?).

Seems beyond being Ferrari cool looking it would add weight out back especially in the material thickness Singer uses and decrease air flow.

But to get back to your question, it would be very easy to make this yourself. Buy the acrylic or polycarbonate. Make template cut out and drill. Don't remove the protective film until completely done sanding the edges of perimeter and holes. Simple.

If you look closely at the Singer part in photos you can see that the holes were drilled as there have tiny heat cavities from drilling still visible. I believe the latest R&T has a photo which clearly shows more fine sanding was needed.

Should be an easy piece to fab.... Or pieces depending on how you mount it.

Btw - Those holes in the Singer piece are not drilled - Water-jet, then finished off by hand....

They sure don't look finished to me.

I still don't understand the purpose of these.

I feel like I'm with family reading threads and posts on this forum^

Car 311,

I was thinking if you bought a BIG sheet of HC expanded metal ($10 +) the material under stucco, you'd have enough to orient the tiny openings from side to side and so that they would draw in air because the openings are angled as you know.

Take a look at that wire lathe (Lowes/Depot) it goes up on a wall in only one direction to catch and hold the scratch coat. The angle of the openings should also catch air if oriented right.

Only problem is it's kind of jagged to the touch and would maybe benefit from a few coats of VHT Etching primer, then high build primer and then VHT satin black engine enamel (good rattle can stuff)

Check out this perforated metal. Edges would finish better.

Remember that polycarbonate (lexan) will crack if too much gas/oil

IIRC, it also softens/distorts around 240 deg F

Not sure the specific environment of the grille, but my car would use metal

Any decent shop fitting company should be able to make these with holes that are correctly finished as these just look like they have been left as cut.

Easy to make but I agree that they seem a bit of a waste of time and will probably deteriorate quite quickly.

I thought one of the mantras of the Singer was that everything was functional? My take was that the perspex grille was some sort of homage to Rob's orange car...

I hold the Singer in high regard, but how is e.g. beautiful paint and detail - functional?

Wow. The FIRST thing I think about with any new car, Porsche or otherwise, is the color, beautiful paint, and details like the interior colors and surfaces, etc. A car that has all of those things very carefully tended to, including serious, informed aesthetic consideration, is seldom one that has been ignored in terms of function. Obviously some will argue against this perspective and that's their prerogative, but to each his own. Every car has value for many reasons, and Singer pushes all of the buttons.

You may not have experienced being a Jag owner, or in more vintage times, a Maserati. Beautiful but alas, not functional due to a lack of engineering and/or quality control.

Function, as in "it works", not how it looks.
