Spring plate angle

Hi,

I am replacing the rubber bushes of the rear springplates of my car. Before I removed the springplates I measured the angle the springplates are mounted. Left I measured 36.5 degrees and right only 34.5 degrees. Is this normal? Both torsion bars are 24 mm so I expected that the angle would be more or less the same.

Any ideas?

There are three factors that could make the spring plate angles uneven. 1) The rear end is not lifted at exactly the same height, side-to-side. 2) The wear on the torsion bars is not exactly the same. 3) The L/R vehicle ride height was set differently.

I would not worry about this. Use those angles as a reference point to reinstall the bars after you replace the bushings. If the heights are different, you may wish to readjust one corner.

I suppose it is too late now, but prefer marking the position of the spring plate on the inner fender well. I clean the area behind the spring plate and put some wide (2"/50mm) masking tape on the body and scribe a line on that. You must clean the area for the tape to stick. Setting the torsion bars on an early car makes you really appreciate adjustable spring plates.

Porsche Crest

Peter,

The angles ARE supposed to be the same on each side, with a small tolerance allowance. Your car was probably lowered or adjusted by someone who was a bit careless!

The factory spec was 36.5° to 37° for your car. The final check is for side-to-side ride height difference no greater than 5 mm between left and right sides!

Go to this page: http://www.vintagebus.com/cgi-bin/spring.cgi If your t-bars are stock, use the default t-bar size. Plug in the car's weight, and there's your angle.
