Question 7" fuchs up front. Mistake? See pics.

I move the rear 7" fuchs with 225/50 16" tire to the front of my car to see how they would look.

The passenger side sticks out more then the driver's side (USA car). I know I have brought up the topic about this anomoly before. The difference is about 1/2 inch.

Am I making a mistake putting 7" in the front? Does the right front tire look stupid? Maybe I should use 205/55s instead of 225/50 to reduce the effect?

I am also considering 9" in the rear. I have the same problem in the rear. Are 9" a mistake too?

Opinions please.

FWIW, I'm amazed at putting 225 in front. I had to play a lot with camber, and I have the lips rolled to prevent the LF from rubbing, with 205 tires (SP9000).
And YES, the 911 is notoriously asymetrical...

WOW, you had trouble with 205s!

I am thinking that the way to go is 205/55 16 but now I am worried about 9" wheels on the back.

My 7" wheels needed a 1" spacer for the rear to get them to a reasonable "depth".

Assume 9" wheels are not 2" farther out than the 7" (some of that 2" difference must go toward the inside. correct?)

Its a matter of personal preference, but I think a 225 is too big for the front of an SC/Carrera street car. Doesn't look right and ruins the beautiful steering feel of the car.

Others would disagree. For many, the answer to "what is the right tire size?" is always "what is the biggest tire that will fit?"

Point taken, Jim T.

I will likely go with the 205s in the front.

Any idea of 9" in the rear?

9" rears fit very well. better than 8's due to less positive offset. the 7" fronts also spray mud on the fenders and doors more than the 6's.

For sport use I run 7 and 8 Fuchs with 225/245 tires and I do think the car looks kinda goofy. I had the same "look" as your photos, and I had to roll the fender lips to prevent rubbing on the left side (I did both sides in the process) and I also dialed in negative 1.25 camber which makes the top of the tire come in more.

As far as the look goes I like it much better with the smaller tire up front (205) but the competition Kuhmos only come in 225 size for the 16" rim.

If I may interject..... I have 7's front and 9's rear with 225/50' and 245/45's. IMHO, this makes the car look really agressive and the handling is much better than my old SC which had 6's and 7's. I do run 1 degree negative camber and did need to roll the front fender lips. Not a big deal, cannot even tell.

Looks to me like the passenger side needs more negative camber. I believe that is where the discrepency is.

You should use 205/55's on those 7's up front.

I have 7 & 9 with 205/55 and 245/45 F&R.

I was told the 225/50 fronts were too much for the light weight of the 911s.

Sometimes I wish I had 225/50 up front though, as I get quite a bit more understeer now on the street. Then again, I hit my front passenger fender once in a while when going to fast for a right had turn and hit a bump.
Pics on my signature file...

I am very happy with 7s 225/55/16 and 8s with 245/50/16 on narror body 82 911 SC. I love the handling, doesn't rubb anywhere. Just replaced the shocks with Bilsteins sport - awesome, i like it even more now!

You are right about the camber. The toe is off too. But this is not the only issue. Both wheels on the right side of the car protrude farther out than the wheels on the left side if measured fron the center of the hub.

It is official..

I ordered two 16 x 9" fuchs and four tires.

WOW, these babies are expensive.

The tire sizes are 205-55 and 245-45

I also bought inlaid crest center caps.

I'll post pics of the final product.

Thanks for all of your help.

I live in Novato, but can't resist taking her to Tahoe every chance I get.

The first shot is at Soda Springs where I first learned to ski in the late 50's.

The next one is at the Kiva parking lot at the lake.

The last one was on the way back, yesterday afternoon, on Hwy 50.

I did the round trip to dial in my mixture control and check my mileage. Got 34.8mpg on the uphill leg and squeezed 38.5mpg downhill.

Joe,
What does the wife(?), or girlfriend(?) in the picture think about you pulling over to take a picture of the car? It almost looks as if she is saying, " not again!"
