Help Fixing Broken Alternator Hub Extension Vane "Rivet"
I took my fan and alternator out tonight. In doing so, one of the "rivets" that holds the metal vane to the plastic hub extension bolting up to the back of the alternator is broken.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Can I just use a pop rivet? Drill out what's there and replace with a bolt and nut? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441081558.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441081566.jpg |
For what it's worth, on my SC the vanes were a bit loose and rusty so I just drilled out the rivets, sand blasted and painted the vanes and then reattached them to the plastic cone with new rivets and washers on the inside of the plastic cone. Worked like a champ.

Pop rivet and suitable washer on the inside works fine

Yep I had the same problem. I just put in new rivets on mine too works just fine.

Sweet. Thanks everyone!

Just thought I'd follow up here. I drilled out both rivets and removed that vane entirely. I took this as an opportunity to clean both of them up a bit and paint them.
When reinstalling, I used 3/16" diameter rivets with a 1/8" grip range. On the back side I used a single 5mm flat washer. I think the result looks great! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441204228.jpg |
Looks awesome! You put both vanes back on correct? That's really important.

Hi gazzer,
Yup! Both are on. It's just hiding behind the other one in the pic. :) |
My vane is broken.....any idea where I can get new one?????

Try dcauto in North Carolina they can probably get you a good used one. There's also a famous dismantler in northern CA that my old brain cannot conjure right now. The googleplex should be able to find them for you.
