78 911 California summer tire recommendation
Going to replace all 4 tires on my 78 911. 16" Fuchs and going with 205/55/16 front 225/50/16 rear. Tire shop recommended the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3, the BFGoodrich G-force Sport Comp-2 or Bridgestone RE-11.
-$600 budget -Summer Southern California driving only -No wet/rain driving Doesn't have to be a long mile tire…more focused on something that works well for the conditions above and $600 budget. Car is not a daily driver, so sticky and more aggressive tire is good. Recommendations? |

I'm in Canada and our tires are Eeexpensive and limited selection.
I bought DUNLOP DIREZZA DZ102 (copy paste sorry for caps). Decent tread wear, nice and sticky, good price. If I was in the US, I would SNAP buy Dunlop Star Spec instead. (Price is near double up here). |

I'm in the market for some new tires and am leaning towards the new Bridgestone RE-71Rs. Supposedly better than the RE-11s and seem to meet your requirements.

Either of the above are my go-to tires for these cars, both are great. I'm running the re11's on my 72 hotrod and the direzza's on my 83. Can't go wrong with either.

Love my Continental Extreme Contact DW summer tires -- seem to fit your bill to a "t" and will run you just over $400 for the set

RE-71R's look like a good option. You leaning toward one tire over the other? Description on the Bridgestone site is almost identical for both models.

Hankook Ventus R-S3 are my choice. On my second set, very predictable and quick. Won my class at Parade Auto-X with them. And, you will be be in your $600 budget!

My autocross buddies tell me the RE-71R is the hot new performance street tire. No personal experience but I've heard great reviews.

Since you aren't prioritizing long lasting or wet performance, forget the AS/3 (apparently the best performing all-season ever) and Conti DW (what I run year round in CO).
RE-11/-11A, RE71R (replacement for the RE-11A), RS3, Z2 Star Spec are your best bets. I think the BFG Rivals come in the correct sizes as well, and at autocross there are fans of each. Are you on 6s, 7s, 8s, and/or 9s? Only the RE-11/11A come in 245/45/16, FWIW, but I would probably only run those on 9s.

I have good luck with Kumho tires. I don't race, track or such nor do I purposely drive in the rain or wet. They are inexpensive but good looking. Give 'em a look: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+LX+Platinum&partnum=06VR5ELX&GCID=C13674x012-tire&KEYWORD=tires.jsp_Kumho_Ecsta_LX_Platinum_Tire&code=yes&src=17540115&ci_sku=06VR5ELX&ci_sku=06VR5ELX&ci_src=17588969&ef_id=VaL7wgAABV70AkvY:20150729171645:s
(Man, that's quite a link - but it works!!) Tom |

I love my Michelin A/S 3 for here in Oregon. But if it's for Summer and dry only, I'd probably go with the Bridgestones.

I was hoping to see a 245/45/16 in the RE-71R, but no dice. Can't blame the manufacturers because I'm sure they wouldn't sell many in that size.

Nokian nrv tyres are great. I've been running them for about 10 years. Look good, ride is very good, great road adhesion And are also very good in wet conditions. Made in Finland.. When I need another I will go back again.

I noted this for the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 recommendation, as I may need new rear tires this year rather than next, and the car gets driven in the rain. Any other rain-worthy recs?

The AS/3 is the highest-rated all season for dry performance, while still being proficient in the wet.
The Conti DWs (summers, not all-season) I use for daily driving are some of the highest rated for wet grip (also long lasting, and quiet).

After driving mine all last winter here in Western Oregon, I'd call them far more than just proficient in the wet, they are actually the best wet weather tires I've ever used. They are so good in the wet that I will put them on our DD Golf TDI next time, even though the performance level will be overkill.
