Is this a sin?
Dear Friends
I have this 1976 911 coupe that i would like to make a ´73 RS tribute in viper green, right now the car have the window frame in aluminum (silver in color) not in great shape either I would like to paint it all in black ( windshield moldings, door frames, rear quarters, etc) Questions: 1-) Is this like some kind of sacrilege ? 2-) Should I keep it in silver? 3-) If i paint can i one day return to the original color and finish of the part? Please let me know your thoughts Regard Ricardo |

If you are going for the 73 RS look you want the silver frames. An RS tribute with black frames doesn't look right. But to answer all your questions with one answer.... It's your car and you should build it the way you want and drive the heck out of it!

It may not be a sacrilege, but 76s are move valuable cars than they were, say, 5 years ago. Big money to do RS flares and color change with backdated bumpers, fenders and hood...
On the basis of preserving bucks, you'll have more in it than its worth. On the basis of loving what you drive, go for it! (this discussion should probably not be in parts for sale)

As John mentioned, 73RS silver is correct.
If you want the black, an alternative would be to sell all your silver to someone looking for it, and buy the black stuff already black. It will look better and last longer. Peeling black paint over silver looks the worst. cheers, dug

abides.

1. No
2. Yes 3. It is a lot of work to properly refinish the silver trim. You need to strip the anodizing, polish the aluminum trim, then re-anodize it. There was someone here on Pelican that offered such a service not too long ago.

Painting anything viper green is indeed a sin.

Yes, a sin. But it is your car.

Do it. Make sure you put at least a 3.6 in it. Post pics.

They can be sanded and polished. Just the out side part and they will look great. If they start to dull just use Never Dull on them.

Three 'Our Father's', three 'Hail Mary's' and make a good act of contrition.

Mid-years don't get the respect they deserve. personally, i would hesitate, just as you are. i've met so many guys who are now 'backdating' the swb that somebody 'updated.' that's your risk.
personally, i'd be more inclined to "RS" a 76 912 than a 911S, but as others have said, at the end, you have a lot of $$$ in it, but if you want it, you want it. best of luck, my friend. |

Doing an RSR-inspired project right now on a '77 S coupe. However, this car had already been cut and flared, so I felt OK about. It will have a hot 3.2 in it and be very lightweight.

RS Tribute way to go!! Remember the 1974 on bumpers were a QUICK FIX, not well thought out fix to make the 911 legal to sell in it's main market the US. `74-88 911's just don't look as clean, like the original body and what came after 1988, IMO.
Blacking out chrome just plain looks much better/cleaner, again IMO. Sand w/lite grit and paint with quality semi-gloss. Ya you will have to touch-up from time to time. Or disassemble and powder coat. It's your car do the way you like. Just do a good job. |

Never mind the exterior silver trim. To do an RS interior will cost you pain and lots of money and if you leave it as it is the exterior silver trim will end up simply as lip service to a proper full on replica. Have you ever tried to find an early original dash top in nice condition for instance? 73 recaro seats and sliders for instance? An RS steering wheel for instance? Seat belts, door cards and accessories, carpet, pedals, gear stick, handbrake assembly etc etc
73 RS's were never available in silver so You are in for the colour change too and therefore my advice is to restore it to stock or sell as is a look out for a really well done replica preferably on a 73 chassis. It will cost you less in the long run and look better. Regards Mike
