is this a leaky CV joint seal?

Finally got car up on a lift and was able to take some pictures...

CV boot looks dry and intact, but joint from transaxle seems to be throwing oil. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Sorry to type, it is the differential seal. Mine has started weeping too :-(.

Oh the joy, another thing to take care of when I drop the engine this winter

Yes, seeping differential seals. I wouldn't worry about it the way it is. Just keep an eye on it.

Thanks guys, I'm guessing this is a big job from the way you're talking about it :-/ will research.

Weird that the transmission was just rebuilt (I believe) about 12k miles ago...how long do they last?

A lot longer than 12k but our gearboxes are getting old and the hub seal surface may be worn (like a lot of things in these old cars)

The best thing I could tell you is keep an eye on your fluid levels and enjoy your car. Don't stress over stuff like this.

My vote goes for output flange seal. Not a terrible project. Drop the axles, unbolt the flange, pry out the old, and tap in new - re-assemble. Can be done on jackstands, but a lift makes it a breeze.
I did mine along with a rear suspension refresh. Seals are about half way down on page one:
And we're off! '74 Rear Suspension Rebuild

I'm replacing mine next week. Noticed Swepco leaking from drivers side axle.
