First time on track tomorrow - Suggestions?
I have been to about 6 Driving School weekends in BMW's, but never in a 911 - so I think I qualify as a virgin (at least that is how I am approaching this).
Any suggestions on tire pressures - AVS Intermediates (205's and 245's)? Track ambient temps should be 60-70 F. and dry. I am running Mobil 1 (15W-50), Super Blue ATE Fluid, PBR Deluxe pads, new Bilstein Sport shocks... so the car should be set-up fine. To enhance cooling, I removed the front fog for cooling. Should I also run the heater? I am open to more suggestions...

May I inquire which track are you going to, and which group is putting on the event?

With the heater off, it dumps the hot air under the car. So, run the heater only if your toes are cold.

Running the heater is a water-cooled trick - doesn't do anything for us air-cooleds.

I am very concerned (OK... nervous) about the weight 'hanging' out back. I have grown quite accustom to 50/50 perfectly balanced BMW's... this will be a great learning experience for me! I will be taking it SLOW...

Is that a private renting of the track, or can anyone participate?
If its open, what's the cost and time? Thanks. |

About "taking it SLOW" and rear weight bias; You mostly need to remember to be quick with steering inputs. Pre-race Zen practice: Emission-son, go get a broom, turn it upside-down. Place in the palm of your hand and learn to keep it balanced there. Once mastered, learn to move about, by initiating the broom to swing out a bit AND under control. Quick accurate inputs will be key. Once this task is mastered, we will discuss, my 911 and "wax-on, wax-off"

LOL. 10-12 track days and want to qualify as a virgin?
![]() But that's still the right approach with a car you've never had on the track. Be especially careful as you apply power thru a turn, 930's can be a handful even with a ton of experience. It can get pretty exciting when the boost comes on and the driver is not ready. Another problem for turbo drivers is to be aware that there are other cars on the track and some of them quite a bit faster thru the turns. You can power away down the straight and 2 turns later they're right on your rear bumper. It might be a good idea to let that car pass and follow him for a while.

Follow a while is good advice.
Get a feel for the brakes and power, won't take long. After you get a few laps you'll on your buddies like white on rice! Careful out of the turns with the 245's on the rear. You'll have a great time!!!

I was in a similar position to you earlier this year, had good track experience, but had never tracked my 930.
I went out with another 930 owner who was quite experienced, this was a great help when it came to my group. I took it slowly on my first two sessions, but did go off track once due to late braking and decided to straightline the corner rather than try to make it and spin.I gradually built speed by the afternoon and had a blast. If you can hitch a ride with another turbo owner do it. Enjoy yourself.
